The Pacers’ furious fourth-quarter comeback against the Lakers came up short. So, the question is, will they have anything left in the tank for tonight’s matchup against the Clippers?

The NBA odds have the Pacers as 6-point road underdogs but L.A. hasn’t exactly played great lately and is also playing a back-to-back.

Both the Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Clippers are coming off tough losses yesterday, but this one should still feature some fireworks. The Pacers rank second in both offensive rating and effective field goal percentage while the Clippers rank fourth and fifth in those categories respectively.

The Pacers comeback against the Los Angeles Lakers came up just short. Indiana trailed by as many as 19 before getting to within three before falling 150-145 as 2.5-point road dogs in what felt like an early-season Pacers performance. All gas no brakes.

The Clippers, on the other hand, suffered a more humbling defeat, falling 121-107 as 9-point favorites against the Joel Embiid-less Philadelphia 76ers.

After looking like a wagon just a short while ago, the Clippers have been battling consistency and following the loss to the Sixers are 5-6 straight up and 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 games.

The Pacers' issues are clear and have been all season. They give all their effort to a high-octane offense, and it can cost them defensively at times. The Clippers are the more interesting case here. 

With guys like Kawhi Leonard and Paul George on the court, they should be an excellent defensive team, but over this 11-game period, they rank 28th in defensive rating. They also rank 14th in opponent-effective field goal percentage this season.

The Pacers team total for this matchup is sitting at 113.5. They have put up 121 or more in seven of their last 10 games. The three times they didn’t, came in games against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Orlando Magic – three of the best defensive teams in the NBA. 

The Clippers ain’t that. 

The back-to-back doesn’t scare me here, particularly because the Pacers didn’t have to change cities and the Clippers are in the same situation. Take Indiana to go Over this number.

While the Pacers give up a bunch of points in part because of their high pace of play, they do a few things well defensively. One is they don’t allow opponents to shoot a lot of threes and two, they are great at limiting opponent assists. In fact, they lead the NBA in opponent assists per possession.

That leads me to James Harden who has an assist prop of 9.5. The Clippers guard has gone on a bit of an assists tear lately going over this number in five of his last seven games but it hasn’t helped his team win basketball games. Before this stretch, he played below this number in 11 or 12 and now gets a tough matchup with the Pacers. Add Under 9.5 assists.

Conversely, the Clippers are allowing the sixth most assists per possession over the last 11 games. Tyrese Haliburton assists Over right? Well, his assists numbers are always juiced. Instead, let’s go with Andrew Nembhard Over 3.5 assists. He averages 4.2 per game this season and has gone Over this number in three of his last four games.
