Yankees vs White Sox betting preview

Starting pitchers

Nestor Cortes Jr. (0-1, 2.70 ERA): Cortes gave up four earned runs in 5.2 innings of work against the Kansas City Royals on August 10. The Yankees lost that game, 8-4, and the lefty’s poor outing was a big reason why. Cortes doesn’t often give up home runs, but he has now given up three over his last two starts. New York desperately needs the former reliever to keep the ball in the park against Chicago.

Lucas Giolito (9-8, 3.81 ERA): Giolito is still capable of turning in some stellar outings, as evidenced by the eight innings of one-run ball he pitched against the Minnesota Twins on August 9. The righty struck out eight batters in that game, but he just hasn’t had that same command on a consistent basis. The 27-year-old has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his last six starts, but he occasionally goes out to the hill and gets completely shelled.

Moneyline pick

The Yankees didn’t have many lefty bats before the MLB Trade Deadline, but they were able to bring in both Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo. Rizzo won’t be playing in today’s game, but both sluggers are capable of taking advantage of right-handed pitching. With that said, keep an eye on Gallo in this game, as he homered twice in a win over the White Sox last night. Now, he gets to face a pitcher than he really should be able to hit hard, despite being 0 for 3 against him in his career. Giancarlo Stanton, Brett Gardner and Luke Voit have all homered off Giolito, so perhaps they’ll also chip in here.

Cortes’ job in this game will be quite simple. The lefty absolutely must find a way to keep guys like Jose Abreu, Tim Anderson and Eloy Jimenez from hitting home runs. Of course, that’s something you can really say about any team’s best players, but Cortes has had some trouble with homers as of late. He’s just giving his opponents too many easy pitches to hit, and he especially can’t do that against Abreu. The first baseman is on fire heading into this game.

PREDICTION: Yankees ML (+158)

Over/Under pick

The White Sox have been one of the better offenses in baseball all year, and their power is a huge part of that. Chicago can go yard at any moment and the team gets to face a struggling Cortes in this one. Meanwhile, the Yankees have figured things out offensively as of late. New York has scored at least five runs in four of its last five, and the moves Brian Cashman made added some life to this lineup. With neither team having a legitimate stud on the mound, both offenses have a chance at putting up big numbers here.

PREDICTION: Over 9.0 (-112)
