Seattle Mariners’ starter Logan Gilbert was in the middle of the conversation for the American League Cy Young Award before an elbow injury cost him nearly two months. And he still might be at in that conversation at season’s end. He’s just gotta find his groove again.
Facing the Kansas City Royals should help that. The Royals have had one of the worst lineups in baseball for more than a month now. They rank 23rd in batting average, 27th in OPS, and 28th in wRC+ since June 1.
Now, Gilbert has looked a little rusty in his first three starts back in the M’s rotation. But the strikeouts have still been there, and he sits in the Top 2% among MLB pitchers in K-rate. He’s also in the Top 10% in expected ERA and expected batting average.
All this to say, he should dominate this struggling Royals lineup. And that has me looking at his Over 18.5 outs recorded. Now, it would be the first time he’s done that since Opening Day. But the Royals don’t strike out a ton, and with their soft swings, Gilbert could be very efficient tonight.
