The Carolina Panthers took control of the NFC South with a Week 16 win, and now they have the luxury of hosting the No. 1 seed in the conference with the Seattle Seahawks visiting Bank of America Stadium on Sunday, December 28.

My early Seahawks vs. Panthers predictions and NFL picks call for Seattle to bully Carolina on both sides of the ball in Week 17.

Early Seahawks vs Panthers spread pick: Seahawks -7.5

-102 at FanDuel

With the Seattle Seahawks having the benefit of the mini bye following their 38-37 overtime win against the Los Angeles Rams, I’m far less concerned about the cross-country trip to face the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium — or even the potential of this being a letdown spot for Seattle.

The Seahawks are analytical darlings on both sides of the ball, and for all the heat quarterback Sam Darnold takes at times, he’s fifth in EPA+CPOE composite and tied for the league lead in yards per attempt.

If Darnold doesn’t gift turnovers, the Seahawks will score on a middling Carolina defense.

The Panthers have surrendered the ninth-most yards and eighth-highest EPA per play, after all, and they entered Week 16 ranked 24th in defensive DVOA.

Additionally, eight of Seattle’s 12 wins have been by eight or more points, and the Seahawks have scored 30 or more eight times.

So, with Carolina scoring the sixth-fewest points per game (19.1), I’m expecting Seattle to pull away and cover with the spread below the sneaky key number of 8.

Early Seahawks vs Panthers total pick: Under 42.5

Making matters worse for the Carolina offense is how well Seattle has played defensively.

The Seahawks entered Week 16 topping the NFL in defensive DVOA, and they’ve allowed the second-lowest EPA per play while being tied for the second-fewest yards per play following their win on Thursday Night Football.

I don’t expect the Panthers to string together lengthy drives, and the Seahawks have allowed the second-lowest third-down conversion percentage and allow red-zone trips to end in touchdowns at the seventh-lowest rate.

As noted, the Seahawks offense can put up big numbers in a hurry, but the Panthers have played to the Under in five of their past seven games.

I expect the Black Cats to lack the offensive roar and make just enough stops on defense to keep this total Under the number.
