Padres vs Brewers betting preview

Starting pitchers

Ryan Weathers (2-1, 1.48 ERA): Weathers has been awesome for San Diego this season, as he has been a big part of both the rotation and the bullpen. The lefty has, however, been a bit more hittable as of late. In his last 14.0 innings of work, Weathers has given up four earned runs on 15 hits. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not he can get back to his early-season production, as he gave up just one earned run in his first 15.1 innings this year.

Adrian Houser (3-5, 4.53 ERA): Houser was once doing a decent job as a member of this rotation, but things have gotten away from him over the last two starts. After allowing two earned runs and walking five batters in just three innings against the Braves on May 14, Houser allowed three homers and six earned runs in four innings against the Reds on May 21. Milwaukee needs him to be a whole lot better than that moving forward.

Moneyline pick

The Brewers had a good chance at earning a victory in Wednesday’s game, but the team was unable to get the job done. Now, Milwaukee is sending Houser to the mound for the series finale, and that really doesn’t bode well for the Brewers. Houser pitched 4.2 innings of two-run ball against the Padres on April 21, and Milwaukee ended up earning a 4-2 victory in that game. However, this is not a guy that works deep in games, and he tends to run out of juice later on. Hitters also start to figure him out after a bit, so expect San Diego to be ready to go this time around.

Lauer has been a disaster against left-handed hitters this season, as lefties are batting .303 with four homers and 10 RBI in just 76 at-bats against him on the year. The absence of Trent Grisham will likely be felt for the Padres this afternoon, but there are still players that can rise to the occasion. Keep an eye on Eric Hosmer, who is 0 for 6 against Houser in his career. Hosmer is a very smart hitter, so it’s hard to imagine him not finally breaking through against the Milwaukee starter in this game. Also, somebody like Jurickson Profar could emerge as an unlikely hero. Profar is unplayable against left-handed pitching, but he is extremely productive against righties.

PREDICTION: Padres ML -130

Over/Under pick

With two mediocre starting options on the mound, the right move seems to be to take the Over. Weathers might be able to give the Padres four innings of one-run ball or something, but he’s just as likely to let Milwaukee put three or four on the board early.

Meanwhile, Houser isn’t in a position to go out there and blank San Diego in this one. He has really struggled in his last two outings, and now he runs into an offense with serious firepower. And, for what it’s worth, both of these offenses are liable to wake up after combining to score three runs in 10 innings on Wednesday.

PREDICTION: Over 8.0 (-110)
