The Padres (56%) lead the majors in average against right-handed pitching this month, and they should get to a struggling Sandy Alcantara.

My Marlins vs. Padres prediction expects two clear team trends to hold at Petco Park when these teams take the field at 4:05 p.m. ET, starting with the Padres' stellar 58-28 record against sub-.500 opponents.

Conversely, a Miami Marlins squad with nothing left to play for owns a dismal 31-45 mark when facing winning teams, making this a prime spot for the Padres (56% favorite) to take care of business once again.

Who will win Marlins vs Padres today: Padres moneyline

For help understanding probabilities, see our odds calculator.

I’m on the San Diego Padres up to 58%.

Sandy Alcantara is really struggling. He's allowed at least four runs in four of his past five starts, posting a 5.52 xFIP along the way.

It’ll be tough to get back on track against the Padres. They rank sixth in hard-hit rate, fifth in xwOBA, and first in xSLG against right-handed pitching in September.

Alcantara has had a difficult time going up in class. His 3.84 ERA on the year rises to 4.97 when isolating matchups against Top-10 opponents in xwOBA.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Sandy Alcantara is not in good form, sitting 28th among today's projected starters in SIERA over the past month.

Marlins vs Padres Over/Under pick: Over 7.5

I expect plenty of offense in this game and would play the Over to 57%.

Alcantara has posted a 1.52 WHIP over the past month while striking out just 13.5% of opposing batters. He’s allowing a ton of baserunners, and his inability to generate punchouts will be especially problematic against an offense consistently making quality contact.

The Miami Marlins quietly slot inside the Top-10 in average, wOBA, and SLG against righties this month. Meanwhile, Walker Buehler owns a middling 4.16 xFIP over the past 30 days and is unlikely to slow the Marlins entirely.

Marlins vs Padres home run prediction: Fernando Tatis Jr.

Fernando Tatis Jr. is crushing Alcantara’s pitch mix.

He has managed an impressive .333 ISO with a 20.7% barrel rate and 69.2% hard-hit rate over the last 25 games when facing Alcantara’s four most-used pitches. Those are remarkably strong power outputs.

Using the same criteria, Tatis Jr. owns a low 4.3% walk rate. He is tearing the cover off the ball and doing so aggressively. He’s not grinding out free passes.

He can’t leave the yard without putting the ball in play, and his low walk rate is a bonus.
