Mariners vs Yankees Picks and Predictions: Are The Bronx Bombers Finally Back?

The Yankees offense has seemingly awoken recently and will look to stay hot when Seattle visits the Bronx for the opener of a four-game set. Facing off against a southpaw — which has been beneficial to the Bombers all season — we like them to keep rolling.

Starting pitchers

Tyler Anderson (5-8, 4.39 ERA): Anderson was previously with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he now finds himself as part of a solid Seattle rotation. The lefty gave up three earned runs in 5 1-3 innings of work in his first start with the Mariners but his team ultimately lost that game to the Texas Rangers. Still, it wasn’t a bad performance from Anderson, and Seattle would take something like that against this now-dangerous New York lineup.

Nestor Cortes Jr. (0-0, 1.93 ERA): Cortes has mostly worked as a reliever for the Yankees this year but he did start against the Tampa Bay Rays on July 28 and pitched five innings of one-run ball in that one. Cortes has answered the bell whenever New York has needed him in a spot start or bulk reliever appearance, and the team will be hoping that he can pitch four or five solid innings in this game.

Moneyline pick

The Mariners have the worst batting average in baseball against left-handed pitching, so the Yankees should get away with having Cortes on the mound in this game. And with the way New York’s offense has been rolling lately, the team wouldn’t need anything special from the lefty either.

Cortes pitched five innings of one-run ball against the Rays in his last trip out — anything close to that would be perfect for the Yankees, and it’s not unrealistic either.

On the flip side, the Yankees have crushed lefties all year, so they should be able to get to Anderson in this game. New York is tied for sixth in the league in both homers against southpaws and batting average against them.

While the Yankees are a righty-heavy lineup, keep an eye on their new (left-handed) acquisitions in this game. Joey Gallo homered in his lone career at-bat against Anderson, while Anthony Rizzo is 7 for 18 with a homer and two RBIs. Rizzo also happens to be hitting .347 with six homers and 16 RBIs against lefties on the season and has been on fire since putting on the Yankee pinstripes, hitting .400 with three home runs and an RBI in all six games with New York.

It wouldn’t be too surprising if both of them spark New York’s offense, but the team also has plenty of other players that hit lefties well.

Overall, the Yankees should be able to take care of business here, which is why they’re such big favorites. If you prefer tossing it in a parlay or taking the run line rather than laying the juice, go for it.

PREDICTION: Yankees (-230)

Over/Under pick

The Over has hit in six of the last nine games Seattle has played and the team now gets a crack at a relatively green starter.

Cortes might not allow a ton of runs in this game, but it’s unlikely he throws up a goose egg... and the Yankees bullpen isn’t perfect.

However, it’s the New York offense that makes the Over look like the play in this game. The Yankees have scored 23 runs over the last two games, and they now have a nice mix of power on both the left and right sides.

Look for New York to keep rolling with another big offensive performance here.

PREDICTION: Over 9.5 (-105)
