Starting pitchers
Jesus Luzardo (0-1, 6.10 ERA): Luzardo fought his way through 5 1-3 innings against the Dodgers his last time out to help the A’s secure their first win of the season. The 23-year-old lefty battled his control with four walks but held L.A. to just two runs. Luzardo relies mostly on a four-seamer and a curveball to get batters out, but he will need to lower his 1.73 WHIP if he wants to find success this season.
Zac Gallen (2020: 3-2, 2.75 ERA): Gallen missed the first two weeks of the season with a forearm injury but he is ready and raring to go following a season that saw him pitch to a 2.75 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and strike out 10.3 batters per nine innings. The right-hander uses a good mix of pitches to make batters uncomfortable including a four-seamer, a cutter, a change, and a curve.

Moneyline pick
Nothing has really gone right for the A’s this season. The pitching, the hitting, nothing. When it comes to the pitching staff, the A’s rank dead last in ERA, opponent batting average, and strikeouts. While the offense is dead last in OPS and ranks 28th in scoring, plating just 3.2 runs per game. Yikes.
The Diamondbacks’ pitching hasn’t been much better but they get a big boost with the return of Gallen, who finished ninth in National League Cy Young voting last year. Gallen’s good mix of pitches creates a lot of soft contact, which doesn’t bode well for an A’s team that is hitting just .170 against right-handers this season.
While Arizona is still missing its offensive catalyst in Ketel Marte, who had just been ripping the cover off the ball to start the season, the D-backs are a scrappy bunch that hits for average and does well to get on the base (sounds like the old A’s). If they can work counts with Luzardo and get to a bullpen that ranks 28th in ERA, it could be a long night for the A’s.
PREDICTION: Diamondbacks (+104)
Over/Under pick
When it comes to the total, 8.5 may seem a little high when you think about how bad the A’s have been at the dish, but the Diamondbacks should be able to do most of the legwork here.
The Diamondbacks score a middle-of-the-pack 4.5 runs per game this season but they are much more comfortable with the dimensions at Chase Field, as Arizona's offensive output soars up to 6.67 runs per game when playing at home. It has also done a decent job of hitting against left-handers this season, posting a .254 average and a .740 OPS.
And while the A’s bats have been stuck in the mud to start the season, maybe they are starting to turn things around after putting up 13 runs over the final two games in their last series against the Astros. Bet this one to go Over the number.
PREDICTION: Over 8.5 (-118)
