Yankees vs Blue Jays Picks: Ryu Gets Toronto Back on Track

Ryu is off to a strong start after a great first season with Toronto. The lefty has a 2.92 ERA and 0.97 WHIP over 12 1-3 innings of work and looked sharp against the Yanks on Opening Day.

Last night it was New York Yankees’ ace Gerrit Cole who took center stage, and he did not disappoint. Now it is the Toronto Blue Jays’ turn to put their best foot forward when they hand the ball to Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Ryu and the Jays will be slight baseball betting favorites as they look to even up the series with the Yankees, who will counter with Jameson Taillon.

Check out our free MLB betting picks and predictions for Yankees vs. Blue Jays on Monday, April 13, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET.

Starting pitchers

Jameson Taillon (0-0, 3.86 ERA): Taillon was solid if unspectacular in his Yankees debut, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in 4 2-3 inning pitched. But solid and stability are what the Yankees need in their rotation this season. Taillon uses a good mix of a fastball, slider, and curve.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-1, 2.92 ERA): Ryu has looked like a stud in his first two starts, pitching to a 2.92 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP while striking out 12 in 12 1-3 innings of work this season. That includes holding the Yankees to two runs on four hits over 5 1-3 innings on Opening Day. While Ryu isn’t your typical 2021 ace with gas of 100 mph, he mixes speeds and location better than most and arguably has baseball’s best changeup.

Weather

It should be a beautiful night for baseball in Dunedin with mostly clear skies, temperatures in the mid-70s, and a moderate seven-mile-per-hour wind blowing straight out to center field. Be sure to monitor the gametime conditions with our MLB weather info.

Moneyline pick

The Yankees took Game 1 of this series thanks to a strong performance from Gerrit Cole while the offense was fueled by catcher Kyle Higashioka, of all people, whose two home runs were all the scoring the Yanks needed in their 3-1 win.

This one could be another tight affair. Ryu has looked strong early in the season and has had the Yankees’ number the last two times he's faced them, giving up just two runs on nine hits in 12 1-3 innings.

Without Higashioka, the Yankees’ offense, particularly the top of the batting order, has looked shaky and is hitting just .231 and scoring 4.01 runs per game as a team this season. Ryu certainly has the ability to keep them off balance.

While the best bet here may be to take the Blue Jays on the five-inning moneyline, backing the favorite with their ace on the bump is the way to go. While the Jays’ bullpen isn’t as strong as New York's, it’s strong enough to protect a small lead.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays (-115)

Over/Under pick

When it comes to the total, this number once again seems rather high, as these American League East rivals have played tight games dating back to last year, with the Under cashing in all four meetings this season.

While we like the Jays to get the job done, their offense, while showing flashes, has not been consistent to this point, hitting .216 through 10 games. And if they're going to score in this one, they will likely have to do it against Taillon because the Yanks’ bullpen once again looks like the best in the majors. New York's relievers collectively have a 1.61 ERA, a 0.74 WHIP, and are allowing teams to hit just .154.

With the Jays handing the ball to their ace and having a bullpen that isn’t too shabby in its own right, we like this trend of low-scoring games to continue.

PREDICTION: Under 9 (-110)
