This shit started in 2019 & obviously this one employee had access to sensitive data that went unchecked. 

Moving forward, her boss & their boss should be gone. A review of who has access to this data needs to be done as well as how this was not found during the normal auditing process needs to be identified.

Overall, food stamp fraud is rare.  Accounting for almost 1% of total benefits.  Bigger concern is republican funding cuts to vital food assistance programs for vulnerable population.

This is more utter nonsense.  This is not only NOT rare it is very costly.  It has also been vastly exacerbated since the Wuhan Flu.  For example:

Meanwhile, in California, thieves stole $181 million in SNAP benefits between June 2022 and February 2024.

There have been nearly 177,000 instances of fraud in the first quarter of 2024 across 46 reporting states, according to data supplied by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). It comes as some states announce plans to tackle electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card fraud affecting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has discovered a major food stamp fraud and bribery scheme, misappropriating millions of taxpayer dollars. This has led to the arrest of a USDA employee and five others.

In Baltimore, a dozen store owners were found to have illegally gained $16 million in SNAP benefits. In Cincinnati, owners of a meat market were convicted of $3.4 million in illegal SNAP transactions, and just last month in Fresno, a bakery owner was charged with $5 million in illegal SNAP transactions.

In New York, a government worker and her associates pocketed $1.8 million partly by buying energy drinks with EBT cards and reselling them to corner stores. In Brownsville, Texas, a pair of thieves gained $1.2 million from SNAP transactions partly by buying food with fraudulent EBT cards and then reselling it in Mexico.

In Florida, a coupleused stolen identities from nearly 700 individuals to apply online for EBT cards, and 100 of the applications were approved. The couple pocketed nearly $200,000 by swapping the cards for cash at a corrupt retailer

In one recent case in North Carolina, a SNAP caseworker altered food-stamp account information and sent EBT cards to her home address, which she then used to pocket $234,000 of benefits and cash.

A new national report estimates that criminals are pocketing almost $400 million in taxpayer money each year by taking advantage of flaws in a federal safety-net program.

Myth of rampant SNAP fraud persists.   Stories receive disproportional attention in media and often dramatized.   SNAP has one of the most rigorous quality control in government to ensure 99% of benefits go to those who are truly eligible according to Center for budget priorities.  But 1% of huge SNAP budget is still alot of money.  However that pales in comparison to other types of fraud.  For examples, income tax and defense spending frauds are worse.  Instead of eliminating rare SNAP fraud, republican spending cuts are more likely to cause much harm or estimated $300 billion loss in benefits over a decade.  Every dollar spend on food stamps generate over $1.70 in economic activity to boost US economy.

   It is not a contest.  Both can be true. You posted that is was rare, when it clearly is not rare.  It does not matter if it is less or more than other types of fraud.  It is defrauded in several ways each year and is very costly. You can still work to get rid of all types of fraud.  But to downplay the fraud is very deceptive.  
   Just because it receives news does not make it disproportionate, because the good news will not receive any news.  What program is in the news every day because they have no fraud — none.  Because that is the excepted way it should be. 
   You can argue the fraud — no matter the amount — should be in the news even more.  But now it has simply become expected.  Just look at the way you have downplayed it — not once, but twice.

Tonight there was a debate held in NYC to become the next Mayor of the Big Apple. Nine Democratic candidates participated, one of which was Andrew Cuomo. 

Cuomo lied to the citizens of NYC when he stated the city had defunded the police. This is total bullshit & not one of the other 8 people on the stage challenged him on the lie. It never happened. NYPD has a bigger budget than some countries.

Later in the debate Cuomo was asked how he would regulate the food delivery industry when his super PCA received 1 million from DoorDash. His response was that he always served the people of NYC & he didn't care who gave him what. His lying is trumpian!

The New York City Police Department will see the worst budget cuts in decades, threatening the city’s public safety after Mayor Eric Adams proposed cuts to every department to offset millions of dollars drained from the migrant crisis.

Adams said the next five police academy classes will be canceled, reducing the number of officers from 33,000 to 29,000 in the next two years. The city’s police department will be below 30,000 for the first time since the 1980s. I think it peaked about 2020 at $5,785,046 B then in 2021 was $5,267,661 B then in 2022 was $5,617,677 B

So, for sure was dropped from its peak.

So, I think he was basically saying it was cut instead of being increased.  Then obviously the cut funds themselves were allocated to different things than what was normally expected.

Maybe ‘cut’ and ‘misappropriation’ should have been used instead of ‘defunded’.

But I am sure that is his point and that would still be correct.

But NYC was not the only city that did it. Just the biggest example of it.
