What does Josh Hamilton have to do with the retarded belief that there is an invisible man floating in the sky that can do magic?

Just a question to finally end this discussion.........I am particularly interested to know what your purpose (or everyones) purspose of this life is then.......

After all..........Surely there has to be a purpose why we are here.......

I get up in the morning to go to work to earn an income to feed myself, roof, shelter etc etc....

I drive a car to get me from point a to b....

I eat to fill my stomach

    I sleep to rest...

The sun is there so life can exist here, plants etc etc etc.

Basically saying everything u see and do has a purpose.....

As a Catholic, i believe the purpose why we are here on this earth is to learn and love, try and live like Jesus in preperation for the afterlife...(tests).........

For atheists, what is there purpose, surely if everything we do and see has a purpose, then surely our existance has a purpose.....

It cant be to earn as much money as we can, or get as many earthly possesions etc etc cause we cant take it with you......

So, by your definition, we die and there is just blackness, nothing etc etc, so what was the purpose of this life then......

If all the micro things we do on this earth has a purpose and the earth itself has a purpose, then what is the purpose of this life?

Hey rostos, I feel ya man. I totally agree with you. I'm not here to try to sway people one way or another, but it comes down to how you were raised. Everything in life IMO comes down to how you were raised. Sure, some people could be raised the wrong way and turn out alright, but for the majority, people learn everything from their peers and when they are growing up. That being said, I went to a catholic school for all of grade school and all 4 years of high school. While there, especially in high school, they did not try to beat it into your brain that all you have to do is obey God and do all things for him. The main thing that I got out of high school is a fantastic education and a firm belief in God. My parents go to church every weekeend as well as the rest of my family. My grandmother goes every single morning. Well me, I dont ever go anymore except for christmas and easter. Its a time in my life where I feel as if I dont need god. Most teenagers think the same as myself.

Now for  my thoughts about the main topic of this thread;dying. The whole prayer thing makes a lot of sense to me. They wanted people to pray for that person to put them at peace. They wanted that person to overcome the cancer so they could be with them for an extended period of time. It is not that they didn't want that person to go to heaven, it is that they didnt want that person to go to heaven quite yet. I firmly believe that you will go onto new life when God is ready for you. A ton of people don't believe and that is totally fine and I can see why you dont. And, just because you don't go to church often, does not mean that you dont believe in God.

I do not know this from experience obviously, but when you are dying you are at peace. As bad as it sounds, some people are ready for it. For example, my grandpa. He had a terrible heart and he survived 3 heart attacks! Thats pretty incredible. He was a very religious man, and he believed that it just was not his time. During this time we all prayed for him and I am sure that he prayed for himself, for the sole fact that he wasnt ready yet. About 9 months ago my grandfather passed away from cancer. I am 1 of 29 grandchildren, but still, everyone knew it was him time. As we were all saying our goodbyes, you could just tell that he was in peace. He told all of us that it was the best he felt it years right before he died.. It was his time. As I sit here and type this, I am currently with my grandmother. I go away for college so I dont get to see her that much. When her husband died of cancer, it took a lot out of her. She has ALS pretty bad and  not having her husband around is very tough for her. We all take turns staying with her at her house because she wants to "die" in the comfort of her own home. As I type this, she is taking a nap in her chair and just looks at peace. Sure, she doesnt look all too healthy, but she is at least in peace.

Sorry for rambling on about all of this as I am sure some dont care or just dont want to hear about this. It may have sounded a little bit off of the topic, but I just wanted to put my 2 cents in about peace and death and also whether people are ready to go or not. I have gotten a lot closer to God in this particular year with many things going on in my life. I feel better about it and also feel like he does help me overcome certain things. Everyone have a great day, and continue to be the best person you can, and things will fall into place for you!

Man, I hate to do it to you guys haha but I have one more quick thing. (Again, not that people care, but if I could just help out one person with this then it would be worth it) As some of you may know, I am only 20 years old. I am very close to my family as a whole and especially my mother. She is a grade A woman, and a strong believer in God. About 2 montths ago, I came home from school for the weekend, and she and my dad sat mee down for a talk. Naturally, if your getting a talk at 20 years old, it can't be a good one. She had told me that they found a cancerous pollyp (sp?) in her colon. As everyone knows, colon cancer is terrible. My mom is 54 years old and was always very healthy. When she told me this my heart had dropped. I did not know what to do or say, but she handled it very well. She said there was nothing they could do except go in for a few more tests then eventually take it out before it spreads if it hadn't already. I lost sleep over this for weeks and I know she did the same. She was too young. Why her? She prayed and prayed and so did the rest of all of us. When she went back in for her second colonoscopy, she got some different news. The doctor had either mixed up the lab results or the pollyp had disappeared. She did not know what to think. After a few more tests, it was confirmed that the cancerous pollyp was gone. She truly believed that it had been a miracle. A miracle that she prayed for and she believes god made it happen.

Point I am trying to make her again is that she was not ready. When it happened to her, she was in no form of peace or dying. She was not ready to die yet. Everyone has different opinions and I respect that to the max, but when things like this happen to me, I cant help but to believe. Have a good one fellas, and I am sorry to get a little off topic.

All I saw was Mom and Cancer.... a lot of us don't have the faith you do, but I don't think anyone is telling you that you shouldn't be able to believe what you want.  I only have a problem with religion stopping scientific progress, and pulling it into politics.  Anything that gives people hope and strength is a good thing, even if it's not for me.

I can't wait.  I'm a good person (except when the Rams lose)... I really believe that I don't do much that your God would look down on... I just cannot WAIT until I die and float up to the pearly gates and God says 'hmmm your resume looks good... very high sin to good ratio... oh but what's this??  You didn't believe that someone could come back from the dead??  BURN IN HELL, SINNER!!!!"

What a good guy he must be.  Going to 'hell' for not believing.  Looks like I'll be sharing it with everyone in the world that isn't a christian/catholic/whatever you are
