Everything in life IMO comes down to how you were raised. Sure, some people could be raised the wrong way and turn out alright, but for the majority, people learn everything from their peers and when they are growing up. That being said, I went to a catholic school for all of grade school and all 4 years of high school. While there, especially in high school, they did not try to beat it into your brain that all you have to do is obey God and do all things for him. The main thing that I got out of high school is a fantastic education and a firm belief in God. My parents go to church every weekeend as well as the rest of my family. My grandmother goes every single morning. Well me, I dont ever go anymore except for christmas and easter. Its a time in my life where I feel as if I dont need god. Most teenagers think the same as myself.

Now for  my thoughts about the main topic of this thread;dying. The whole prayer thing makes a lot of sense to me. They wanted people to pray for that person to put them at peace. They wanted that person to overcome the cancer so they could be with them for an extended period of time. It is not that they didn't want that person to go to heaven, it is that they didnt want that person to go to heaven quite yet. I firmly believe that you will go onto new life when God is ready for you. A ton of people don't believe and that is totally fine and I can see why you dont. And, just because you don't go to church often, does not mean that you dont believe in God.

I do not know this from experience obviously, but when you are dying you are at peace. As bad as it sounds, some people are ready for it. For example, my grandpa. He had a terrible heart and he survived 3 heart attacks! Thats pretty incredible. He was a very religious man, and he believed that it just was not his time. During this time we all prayed for him and I am sure that he prayed for himself, for the sole fact that he wasnt ready yet. About 9 months ago my grandfather passed away from cancer. I am 1 of 29 grandchildren, but still, everyone knew it was him time. As we were all saying our goodbyes, you could just tell that he was in peace. He told all of us that it was the best he felt it years right before he died.. It was his time. As I sit here and type this, I am currently with my grandmother. I go away for college so I dont get to see her that much. When her husband died of cancer, it took a lot out of her. She has ALS pretty bad and  not having her husband around is very tough for her. We all take turns staying with her at her house because she wants to "die" in the comfort of her own home. As I type this, she is taking a nap in her chair and just looks at peace. Sure, she doesnt look all too healthy, but she is at least in peace.

Sorry for rambling on about all of this as I am sure some dont care or just dont want to hear about this. It may have sounded a little bit off of the topic, but I just wanted to put my 2 cents in about peace and death and also whether people are ready to go or not. I have gotten a lot closer to God in this particular year with many things going on in my life. I feel better about it and also feel like he does help me overcome certain things. Everyone have a great day, and continue to be the best person you can, and things will fall into place for you!

Is this odd?

If heaven is forever and all believers are going, why do we talk about the short world here and spending more time here? What is eternity in heaven to 10 years here? Why does this point keep coming up?

What is the point in extending life on this world? We should root for death as believers and get out of this world. Why pay bills, go to work, divorce, move?  Pray for death, it is the gateway to eternal life.

As a Catholic, i believe the purpose why we are here on this earth is to learn and love, try and live like Jesus in preperation for the afterlife...(tests).........

For atheists, what is there purpose, surely if everything we do and see has a purpose, then surely our existance has a purpose.....

It cant be to earn as much money as we can, or get as many earthly possesions etc etc cause we cant take it with you......

So, by your definition, we die and there is just blackness, nothing etc etc, so what was the purpose of this life then......

If all the micro things we do on this earth has a purpose and the earth itself has a purpose, then what is the purpose of this life?

I'm right there with you, only I do it FOR THE SAKE OF HUMANITY and because I GENUINELY CARE ABOUT PEOPLE and FUTURE GENERATIONS ----- not because JESUS said so.

The purpose of life, as I see it, is to live, love, grow, and try to share good will with others.  I'm a very philosophical person and have spent plenty of nights (most with a blunt in hand) pondering all the great questions of life, and I honestly feel like I have the answers.  Maybe not the right answers for everyone, but the right answers for me.  It's about family, learning, and sharing what we have learned with the people around us.  It's about advancing the human race, and preventing the decline of it.

If you ask me there is something really great about being a good person and not because God or Jesus says so... it shows a true, GENUINE care for people, our future, and the future of our children and their children.  I don't do good things to avoid hell.... I do good things because I know one day I will be gone and I want to leave my mark on this world.

What do you think of that?

It's a cold and uncomfortable stance to think that we were just stuck here and are forced to drag on through each day just waiting to die... but there are millions of people who think this way.

But they can be saved.  Not in a religious sense, but just like any other problem you face in life - you can save yourself with some real thought, and not FEARING what you may find out my venturing into unknown territory.  I used to lay awake at night for hours and hours, because I couldn't get these simple life questions out of my head... but I didn't loathe in my misery, I thought until I came up with some real answers that made sense to me and gave me the same soul-filling sensation that you guys get from religion... but mine was from reason, and I think ANY problem can be solved simply through thought and perspective.

That doesn't mean that you are wrong for using God to find answers to life questions, I am glad that you feel the confidence that you do from having 'the answers'.  Just realize that your answers are just that, YOUR answers - they are not right for everyone else.  Whatever helps you to be a good person, go for it.  But religion is NOT required to live a full and happy life, period.

Sure, take the religious road.  Give up when you can't come up with real answers and just listen to what your little book tells you.

Look, this isnt about who is better than who or who will go to heavan first etc etc.......

You sound like you are a good person etc etc, but i am not here to judge......

U said u used to awake at night thinking about these questions.....U arent meant to know the answers to these from physical evidence, if that was the case then there would be conclusive evidence.........and neither party has physical evidence......Thats why it is called faith.......

If u go to a resteraunt, do u want to watch the chef cook your food so he doesnt poison u? No.....But u have faith and confidence that he wont........

I refuse to believe the world "just happened" by "luck" and that we evolved from animals.......and there is no purpose to this at all.......

I firmly believe God created the world, sent his son down Jesus to model to everyone how man should live but ultimately man has free will and will be judged by how they live.....

Some people who live a life of sin refuse to believe this so they dont want to fear what could happen to them......

Other people want proof but they will never get it one way or the other.....NEVER........

People want to blame God for all the wars , distasters etc, but man has free will.....

at the end of the day, it is a mystery......if u think about it too much, u will go crazy....u either believe or u dont........

I generally find though, people that live a life of drug abuse, alcohol abuse, jobless for extended periods of time, gambling debts generally live a life of depression and unhappiness hence there outlook on life.......

I know that if God wasnt in my life i would have gone down a different path, a path of real destruction........

Thank God i didnt....live, learn and love and wait for judgement day..........

Peace...

Not taking any road out. Thats for sure. What do you want me to prove? I have nothing that someone with a closed mind who has already made up there mind is going to listen. I dont need to prove anything. I am not a "Bible Thumper" and I dont go around preaching. Hell I only go to Church a couple times a year. I simply stated what I believe. I am not a philosopher or any kind of know all. I actually gained a lot of respect for you after post #245 and post #246. But then you come back with this dumb comment. I want you to go back and read my post all the way through. I think you will better understand my position on this deal. I am a Christian, if someone asks, I will tell him, but if not I will not. I am very non judgmental and live in many of the same manners in which you do. You just choose to judge me as a Bible thumper and what you have known and seen in other Christians. If you learn that God and science can coexist you will understand much better.

So many questions here, I will go back to the first one.  Why do we want to prolong life if we believe we are going to Heaven?

My best friend died a few years ago from Bladder cancer, he was a believer in Jesus and had faith he was going to heaven, he told me that while he knew he was going, no one was running to go.  I believe it is part of the way God made us as reasoning beings that the unknown created fear in our mortal beings. Why not believe and then kill yourself so you get to a better place, that is crazy because God made us in a way to want to live.

Now my question why are the Christian Bible (Thumpers) made out to be the haters, they are not. or made out to be swallow minded they are not.

If a Christian lives life loving God and caring for others.  Being good and gets to the end and they are wrong no heaven just nothing or we are all in and equal and enlightened and on and on...what is the down side, they had a great life being kind and good and God fearing....

So what about those that hate, steal, lie deny God exists...if they are right and nothing we are equal, if we all get in and are enlightened...at best equal at worst they are looked down upon for being selfish and mean..But what if the Christians are right these are in Hell.

Being a believer has no down side.

Look, if it appears that i'm trying to come off like some superior intellectual being around here, I apologize.  I've made it no secret that it took me 7 years to graduate from college  (but in my defense- i was having WAY too much fucking fun to leave), but there are certain topics that I do feel educated enough to debate on, and religion is one of them.  I've dug deep into this world, through college courses and through my own research and I feel fairly confident in the answers that I have found. Like most, I came from a religious background (Irish-Catholic), and I had this nonsense crammed down my throat at an early age, but as I began to grow up, there were just too many questions regarding what Catholicism had taught me- too many holes (not to mention the attraction of pedophiles to this religion, but i degress.......). So I began to "turn over every stone" in order to seek answers, and that began with picking apart the work of fiction, that is known as "The Bible."  I'm a firm believer that if the "believers" put as much research into this as I have, rather than just using the "cop-out" justification of "faith,", or just accepting because their parents-and their grandparents-and their great- grand parents believed, then they would be able to better understand where I'm coming from. Now, if the "believers" are as confident in their beliefs as I am- then at least it should give you solace to know that I'll be spending my eternity in the fires of hell with Lucifer himself, while Team J-Man frolicks under heaven's pearly gates

I'm no superior intellect either as I only got thru 10th grade of High School. That doesn't preclude me from learning, however. The greatest boon for learning has been the acceleration of the internet. In seconds I can have access to some of the greatest thinkers past and present. It's great. But, I too digress.

Think of the bible in this context. The story hasn't changed over eons. People interpret it in their own weird, sometimes selfish ways, but the key fundamentals haven't changed. Having a brother as a cop, who has told me many times that they know a suspect is guilty when their story changes, is the premise in which I believe it's truth. Again, it's interpretation from others of what's being told has always been suspect to me. I was on a flight to Baton Rouge once and a female minister and I started talking about the money piece of the Bible and how I'm committed to Catholicism because the bulk of its leadership is about the faith and not about the money.  She told me that the Bible said to give wealth to its ministers and "it was written that way." I asked her for that specific passage and when she whipped it out, I read it. She wasn't even close. I then told her if this is what she uses to guide her ministry then she either has the dumbest congregants or she's the worlds greatest salesperson. As usual, she vehemently argued her position, but I shut down with the knowledge I'd just met another Bible-Thumping fraud.

Personally, I think it's smart to question faith...as Job did. Conversely, I think it's a dangerous proposition to arbitrarily dismiss it. At the end of the day, after you listen to the voice in your head and heart, and thoroughly examine your conscience, (and use logic), you'll probably concur the same as me - there's a God out there and I choose to associate with those who believe IN THE SAME MANNER as I do. In other words, CYA and watch out for the religious hypocrites.

so what if i told you about a religion that believes mermaids are holy and they are the true and only gods and we must worship them and believe that they have created everything and when we accept that, when we die, we go to some magical kingdon under the sea with everything we always wanted. no one can disprove this is true.

would there be any downside to believing this?

If you truly have that thirst for knowledge, I suggest- Thomas Paine (way ahead of his time), Christopher Hitchens, the movie "zeitgeist", Richard Dawkins, and 2 of my favorites -Bill Maher and George Carlin, but I'm guessing, that if you're from Alabama - you're probably not interested in anything from Bill Maher

Like I said, I don't read too many full books, but as you know, with the internet, education is only a click away...............

cheers sir

Like I said, I don't read too many full books, but as you know, with the internet, education is only a click away...............

cheers sir
