That's the point of our human conception---it makes possible a harvest of souls who freely choose to seek God, or to reject God. The free choice has a built-in consequence, thus the responsibility of our destiny lies squarely upon our free choices, which God will eternally respect. A man can be coaxed, warned and pleaded with not to drink poison because of the horrible consequences, but the man is free to drink poison nonetheless.

What we do with our intellect, free will, and out time is our responsibility. Death simply marks the moment a soul enters the eternal state. A soul is either in union with God, or separated from God for all eternity. The consequence of those who choose a path of evil, is that it blinds the intellect. Thus there are many smart people who are proud of all the facts they can remember, yet they are not very wise. In fact, often time they are the dumbest people because they miss the very point of their existence.

Does a person with schizophrenia unable to take care of himself....or a person with severe mental retardation have free will?

That's a fine explanation, but what is it based on? It also doesn't explain why we're here in the first place. It seems that there is no conceivable reason whatsoever for god to have created life. The only reason I can come up with is that he wants us to worship him, but you already said god doesn't demand our worship. The notion that god put us here to destroy evil also makes no sense as we've already established, so I'm still a bit uncertain here.

Already asked, buried and ignored somewhere.

I even take it one step further (which is probably not productive considering our counterparts) - and it has to do with the inequity of peoples ability to have free will.

If you are retarded, borderline retarded, or a genius - certainly those three people have differing abilities to reason.  If the correct answer is to accept Jesus as your personal saviour, how can those three be seen equally?  Now throw in their life experiences, and it becomes exponentially worse.

The problem here is the same problem throughout the bible and christianity - the idea of absolute laws.  You MUST accept Jesus to go to heaven.  Oh yeah?  What if I am retarded and grew up in Afghanistan?  How can that rule be applied equally to a person who grew up in Kansas?  You MUST obey your father and mother, you MUST not steal.

The whole idea that morals are absolute are truly religions downfall.

BTW - if you are retarded here, what are you in heaven?  If you are literally born in a vegetative state, what are you in heaven (forget the question of why people are born this way to begin with)?

    The Book of 1 Chronicles

The author was Ezra, written around 430 B.C., recording events between 1000 and 960 B.C.

Understanding your family's history is important. Knowing where your ancestors came from and what they accomplished provides a sense of identity, heritage, and destiny. These are some of the reasons the writer of Chronicles penned this extensive account of Israel's family history. The book of 1 Chronicles begins with a series of genealogies that trace the roots of both King David and the Levites. More than just names, this list represents the chosen people of God---the ancestors of God's covenant people. After the genealogies comes the account of Israel's first two kings, Saul and David. Their successes and failures are shown to stem largely from their spiritual choices. Special emphasis is given to the admirable accomplishments of David's reign. The book closes with David's vision for the Temple that is to be built.

My digestive system works. It serves a purpose. I know that it provides nutrients to my body. God is utterly useless. He is #1 leading cause of death in history. He kills people every day and contributes nothing to my life. You're the one who fails to understand. I can explain EVERYTHING YOU ASK ME or I will acknowledge that I do not know. You and Rostos seem to think there must be answer and then you contradict yourself. God is all good, but he created evil? Oh, he created evil to permit free will. But then he allows people to be born without free will? He wants everyone to find him, to find Jesus, to live a moral life, yet he makes that really hard for some people to do. He kills infants at birth. He cripples people for life. Well, actually, that's humans right? God is POWERLESS to stop it? There are no contradictions on my beliefs, nothing that needs a "gap filler" because I can accept the fact that I don't have the answers.

I just noticed what SJD posted, the specific proverb. GOD IS TELLING US TO NOT UNDERSTAND! God wants us, as humans, created in his image, to just accept blindly what is told to us? This doesn't even make sense. I'll go to a random person and tell em to jump off a building. They'll ask why. I'll respond, "don't try and understand, just trust me." Surely they'd do it, especially if I said god told me to tell them to do it. That is without a doubt the dumbest proverb I've ever seen (but by no means am I saying dumber ones don't exist)

And dont forget, he gives us free will, he gives us a brain for critical thought, and then commands us in the scripture SJD quotes to not trust your own thought and not to use free will.

Why does God allow evil in this world?

Freedom of choice is the Creator's great gift to the human race. "I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants" ---Deut. 30:19

Sin originated in man, not in God. God prevents sin's dominion. ---Romans 6:14

God has, at His own cost, provided a remedy. Our Lord Savior Jesus Christ said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me. ---John 14:16

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

It seems like god had 2 options that would've alleviated all our problems.

    1. Create a world where everyone loves each other. There is no evil. There is no crime, no hatred, no violence. No one is homeless, no one is completely impoverished. There are no countries, everyone gets along. There is no war. Everyone is happy.

    2. Create nothing. Still, no one can explain why god would bother to create a universe with life. He can do whatever the fuck he wants right? Why not create a playground for himself? Why not just continue to exist infinitely like he had before? It just makes no sense.

Wait, sorry, I shouldn't use my brain that god gave me to think logically. My bad. I'll go back to my hypnotic state under god's control.

where do you find this stuff?  this is the venn diagram i've been looking for.  i wish there was one that was more encompassing though.

it's amazing to me how certain religious folks can look at another religious person (of any religion) and call him/her crazy yet ignore their many similarities.

    Why Were You BORN?

Is there PURPOSE for human life? Does life, after all, have real meaning? Here is the awesome truth!

Part 6 of 23. How Man has Used His Powers

Look, however, at what man has actually done with the things he has had intelligence and ability to produce. Thousands of years ago he learned to deal with iron, steel, and other metals. He made implements, constructed buildings---but he also made swords and spears and went out to destroy!

Man has learned how to organize his kind into cities, groups, nations. But to what use did he put the organization he controlled? He organized the able-bodies of his men into armies, and set out to conquer, to destroy, and to acquire by taking rather than by producing and creating.

Man discovered that the powers he possesses allow him to produce explosives, so that he could move mountains if necessary---but soon he began to exert the most frenzied energies of his nations, at incredible expense, endeavoring to develop nuclear weapons faster than his enemies---and now he has already produced weapons of mass destruction that can blast all human life off the earth!

A philosophic country doctor once said it was his belief that everything man's hand ever touched of God's creation man had polluted, befouled, besmirched, and ruined. That statement seemed radical then. But upon observation he was right. Just look about you, and observe. If you are a thinker, you'll see how man, endowed with a portion of God's actual creative power---and the only being on this planet that has it---turns this power of devising, planning, inventing, and producing into destructive channels.

Look at the great factories of the major industrial nations. Here hums and bustles the creative activity of mankind. Man has made some slight approach toward actual God powers, and God activity, in his tremendous industrial development. But there is one deadly fault with all this.

Man has learned to exercise scientific, inventive and mechanical powers in excess of his development in ability to direct the product of his efforts into right and constructive channels!

CD - you will love this site.

It is where I rip off all of my pics, and most of the other things that make me sound well read.

It is a tough site to navigate (along the minimalist lines of craigslist), but you should note there are other sections like "AMA" (ask me anything) and "TIL" Today I learned.  Dont only click on the headline, that takes you to the pic that is linked - but also click on the comments.

It is the most intelligent and ardent group of atheists I have found.

Lets examine the stupidity of this statement.

Man has used technology to cure countless diseases.  Diseases allowed by god, or diseases that god could easily eradicate himself but does not.  Do you realize people used to die from an upper respiratory infection, leprosy, and simple infections?

Do you do any thining for yourself?  One could just as easily write a position that technology has done all good an no harm.  Dont you see that everything you post is either black or white?  Cant you state that technology and advancements has good and bad?  How do you use such a slanted statement to further your position that god is real?

Oh yeah, I forgot for a second.  Gotta scare everyone.  Throw in a few "nuclear bombs" and "weapons of mass destruction" and get everyone scared in to god.

Correction: God has, at His own cost, provided a remedy. Our Lord Savior Jesus Christ said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me. ---John 14:6

Abstract question to anyone who wishes to answer

Let's say we quartered off a nice piece of land on this Earth. It's fully industrialized, it's not like the island on Lost, it's like a normal city. Everything functions, it has basic utilities and everything a normal city would have. In this hypothetical city, the adults never tell their children about god. The children are not brought to church or synagogue or mosques, nothing. Eventually, all the people who had knowledge of god will have died and all is left are their descendants, who were never told of the existence of god. WITHOUT CREATING FACTS THAT I DID NOT INCLUDE IN THIS HYPOTHETICAL, do you think it would be possible for this mini society to "find god?"
