This is in response to reading through Vanzack's religion thread recently... I noticed a lot of conversation going on towards the early part and felt compelled to chime in... but seemed the thread moved on... so I thought I would start this thread and encourage the posting of those tought questions pertaining to god/jesus/bible and I will do my best to clarify and make sense of it to those who are unaware...

I don't want my intentions to come across as converting you or whatever lol... but rather clear up things etc...  so ask away.

Why do Christians choose to worship a book of stories that have been proven to be shaped and edited by rulers of wars over history?

Well sportsfan,  before I get into specifics (and I believe I can address it)   let's look at why Christians believe in the bible?

Here is a very common misconception that seems to rule the debate on the issue:   "That christians believe in bible based on just faith, and are blindly trusting a haphazard book of hard to swallow stories"

This gets spread a lot because a lot of christians don't have knowledge of the bible....    so really if everyone knowns theres this 6000 year old text, it comes down to if you believe its the inspired word of our divine creator... here are some of the reasons why so many have believed it as such for so long... and i think you'll find regardless what you believe that these are much more solid reasons and make one think much more than just the "have faith" presumption prevalent around us...

Countless times, the bible has been right or gave solid advice to mankind, that was generally ignored by societies but there have been many things that have came to light in accordance with our current understanding that proves the bible was right all along...

One quick example is, consider that the biblical practice of circumcising in the bible... god gives moses and the israelites special insturctions to perform it... and it was commanded by god to be done always on the 8th day of life... for a long time that didn't mean anything until the last 20 or 30 years... when man came to his own conclusion that for some unknown reasons the human body is at it highest levels of prothrobin/and vitamin C on the 8th day of life, and that these 2 are the most responsible for blood clotting and healing ability... each human can literally heal quicker and with less risk etc... on exactly the 8th day of life...

yet these desert nomads were doing that thousands of years ago... claiming its commanded from god... it makes it awkward to argue it because its hard to imagine desert nomads with nothing as far as society and education etc... to do this own there own... furthermore compounded by when you look at the current modern world of the time (egypt) they weren't imploring anything of the sort etc... its just the tip of the berg.. to much more examples about germs etc..

the fact that christians are often persuctued is not absent in the bible... in the gospels and the later writing by the apostle Paul (which are the books with names like corinthians and galatians phillipians etc..) there is often a lot of focus in the persecution of christians...  including the prophesised deaths of the apostles and future end time prophecies about christian being pesecuted again to the death because of their beliefs...

For me the fact that Jesus and Christianity is attacked so strongly is almost unexplainable if there weren't divinity in the world... because as far as Jesus goes, theres nothing for anyone to get mad at, nothing at all... so the intense hatred that is out there with such strong sentiment certainly points more to authenticating the belief than debunking it...

back to the first topic.. I wanted to share another example, as I saw something earlier about why God didn't warn us about germs etc...  I thought this knowledge was appropriate...

according the the bible, once God delivered Moses and the israleties into the desert the people were given a lot of basic instruction regarding to all things sanitary and health etc...  this was info that was crucial for them to live over a generaiontal gap being nomadic in the desert...   well its often stressed in these earliest of instuctions (referred to as laws in the bible) that if something is unclean or if you touch something unclean etc... to make sure to put your hands under "running water" and it even goes so far to reeiterate and specificaly say "not standing water"  "only running water"

Well, the modern world (egypt) with all there knowledge and intelligence etc... did nothing of that sort.... this was thousands of years ago, way before Jesus ... fast forward to the 1900s  and right here in America... in the 20s I believe  hospitals were having women coming into birth and they were delievering the babies but dying themselves at astonishing rates... doctors couldn't figure out what was going on.. until someone realized that doctors even in this locale and era rarely if even washed their hands between patients, and if they did there was a bowl of water in each room where the doc might sook his hands for a few seconds...

of course once they stopped doing that and start washing their hands again.. people start living a lot more... and  man began learning for himself about germs etc... its a 20th century concept... even 100 years ago medical science on the worldwide secular level practiced none of what we know as fact today... and yet slaves in the desert several thousand years ago knew this..

Also consider the in the old testament book of Job, it is proclaimed  "He hangs the earth on nothing"  a direct statment from what is considered by some to be the oldest book in the bible, that clearly says the earth floats on nothing (space) ... when you consider the worldly societies that came into so much power all through time starting with egypt (who at the time believed in pagan legends that the earth sat on top of a turtle, that was on to top of an elephant, and crazy things like that)

its only recently that we discover on our own that this is a true statement and would be unlikely to be a lucky guess for someone to make at that time.

Even fairly recently in the 1900s it was first thought that the earth and sat in the "Space" around it supported by some kind of gas etc... in stead of nothing (which is definition of space)

Do Christians acknowledge the fact that there were literally hundreds of men walking the streets wearing dish clothes during the exact period of time named Jesus?

How has a legion of "professors" and secular "philosophers" convinvced the dimmest among us that:

A.)Once upon a time there was nothing, an instant later there was everything. If you believe anything else you are an idiot.

B.)Worshiping a man (and his "theory") who had less understanding of cellular biology than a modern 8 year old is a sign of intellectual superiority.

C.)Having Socratic respect for things currently unknowable and subsequently having faith in or showing reverence to an Almighty of any description is a sign of intellectual inferiority.

The endless repetition of the same mind numbed talking points by these dime store Dawkins wanna-be's is ponderous. They think it make them appear intelligent and they could not be more mistaken.

    Cliff Clavin's Little Known Quotes

    - It's a little known fact that cows were domesticated in Mesopotamia and were also used in China as guard animals for the forbidden city.

    - It's a little known fact that smartest animal is a pig. Scientists say if pigs had thumbs and a language, they could be trained to do simple manual labor. They give you 20-30 years of loyal service and then at their retirement dinner you can eat them.

    - I wonder if you know that the harp is a predecessor of the modern day guitar. Early minstrels were much larger people. In fact, they had hands the size of small dogs.

    - If you were to go back in history and take every president, you'll find that the numerical value of each letter in their name was equally divisible into the year in which they were elected. By my calculations, our next president has to be named Yellnick McWawa.

    - If memory serves, the umbilical chord is 90% postassium.

    - They did a study between postal workers and chimpanzees. They proved chimps were 32% slower. Of course, they were better with public relations.

    - There's no rule against postal workers not dating women. It just works out that way.

    - It's a little known fact that the tan became popular in what is known as the Bronze Age.

I would definetly acknowledge that there were other people at the time named "Jesus"  or  "Yeshua" which is the hebrew name.  But Christians believe that Jesus is the messiah based on much more than fulfilling the "name" prophecy... if there were other people with the same name it in no way disproves the bible

First off, I want to say that any defense talking about putting the bones there to test faith etc.. its pretty hard to swallow for sure... a lot of people will always fall back on something like that when they don't know an answer, while usually there is a more proper response....

Dinosaurs and Darwinism definitely help to make it all confusing and hard to believe the bible... Starting with Evolution...

Its important to understand their are 2 different kinds of evoulution, referred to as Macro and Micro evoulution... Micro evolution is the ability for a species to change in minor ways over a long period of time to suit their enviroment or survival needs... I think it would be silly to dispute this as its evident and is proven....

now when we get to the whole people came from monkeys deal, that is called Macro evolution, which is in a nutshell the dramatic changes in an organism that basically causes a change in species... contrary to popular secular belief, there is no basis to this and is not proven, in fact there has been much evidence to the contrary.

Darwin himself states, in order for his Theory to be true, there would need to be fossil discoveries of all the interim lifeforms from monkey to man...  kind of like the pic/graph you see where monkey gets more and more upright and turns into man....  well there hasn't been any recovery of any of these interim versions of man/monkey discovered... and as of late a lot of the so called "proof" as far as skulls of monkey/men that were discovered in the 1970s have since been debunked as being fake and just regular ape skulls etc.. in many cases, not only that, but the same people that discovered them, have been the ones to come and denounce the authenticity

As far as Dinosaurs...  one thing to consider is that the bible makes mention a few times of dinosaurs...  in the book of Job it talkes about a large dragon type creature... and mentions its tail being as large as a Cedar Tree, and that its strong in the hips, and also that it is an herbivore... now before you say its ridiculous to consider man and dinosaur co-existed consider this...

The whole dating of the world and the things in it, much like macro evolution boils down to man saying its that way... for instance we all here about carbon dating and poly argon dating etc... and that different layers etc... are different times, but where in those rocks etc... are they coming up with those base numbers of millions of years etc...  one would take that as gospel and assume it to be the truth, when in reality it may take more "faith" to blindly go along with that vs. the bible.

One last thought on Poly Argon dating which is considered to be very accurate etc...  Poly dating can supposedly tell the age of fossils and things like that but consider this... if you poly argon date live clams in the pacific ocean, the test will show that they are 1400 yrs old or so, when their still alive.   Thats not to say that the dating isn't a worthwhile tool, or that these methods can't produce insight, because they can..   more what I'm saying is the actual numbers (not the scale) of years are still based ultimately on man made theory...

Its hard to prove any one way or another, but its important to point out that things aren't so cut and dry as far as Bible vs. Evolution etc...  but the general sentiment and conception is that everything science is fact, when everything creation oriented always comes back to man's opinion, and really has a lot less backing it up

You are correct.  The general perception in America is that Darwinism = Smart, sensible, civilized etc...   and that
    Bible=  Stupid, Uneducated, primitive etc...

its plain wrong too, the reason its like this is because our secular science and education hierarchies only allow Darwin's theory to be taught in textbooks and allow the baseline theories of chemical datings as far as years to be taught as fact in textbooks, it of course extends from this to the media etc...

Fact is there are many, many scientists who know the world has a creator, they determine the mathmatical chances of life beginning from chance to be virtually impossible... here is the odds that life was created by chance...

     1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000  (10 to the 26th power)

but here's the kicker if anyone of them makes mention of any of this they can lose their jobs and prestige etc... even at the slightest mention of what is called Intelligent Design, these people aren't even talking god really, just that the world is a product of intelligent design, and its fact its proven, thats why they suppress it.   There is a really good documentary on the subject called "no intelligence allowed"  made by Ben Stein (yeah the ferris bueller one) that addresses this subject, I highly recommend anyone intrested to watch it

I think there is a creator as well, however, I don't think it knows that we exist or it could also be very possible that this creator does not exist anymore either...

interesting crowkillers, I mention all this because the you can't believe in god/bible without believing we have a creator... so you can see why if most people don't know these kind of things it would be especially hard for them to believe in God... confusing to boot, with all the evolution talk etc...

by spreading the word that the world having a creator is much closer to 100% fact then the evolution theory, it gives people a little more to go on...  although you don't believe in the bible, I'm sure you would agree that its a lot easier to believe in it, if your given proof the world has a creator etc....

Experts agree Ardi is very close to the missing link.....the nonsense you have been told by creation scientists is only a road block to the truth.....trying to defend a book that says the earth is only 6 -10,000 years old is absurd...read about Ardi

One skeletal find is hardly any prove, Darwin states in his own literature in order for the theory to be correct there would have to be tons of fossil findings for all the different interim species etc...

This find is really no different than what has been purported from time to time in this area for the last 30 years... others just like this (in principle) have been discovered and later debunked....

As far as the 6-10k year old earth, all I'm saying is that it is spread and taught that it is fact that things are millions of years old etc... and its not fact the base numbers (not the scale) originally come from theory...

its really as simple as this, if Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution were true, it wouldn't take years to find isolated findings to try to back up the theory... instead, there would be tons of fossils of these interim man/monkeys all over the place... and that isn't the case... so while it does nothing to prove the creationist beliefs,  it does disprove darwins Theory, I can say with great confidence if Charles Darwin was alive today he himself would admit the theory is incorrect
