yes, i'd much rather have reactive policing than for our rights to completely disappear and the government be able to stop us, detain us, arrest us any time they want based on what i might do or what i might happen.  in other words, i'd like to keep our constitutional right to be free from government intrusion just because they are suspicious or feel like it.

Have you been stopped, detained, and arrested lately?

So you think our rights have completely disappeared?
    I mean isn't that a little extreme?

If you are gonna say 'no rights' then you should compare it with 'all rights' where there's no police whatsoever.   One extreme to the other.

Yeah, because race relations in the North are at a completely different level.   https://dailycaller.com/2013/12/03/cops-arrest-high-school-basketball-players-for-waiting-for-school-bus-while-black/2/

It is so transparent that people that bash the South are just envious, and why shouldn't they be? We have the best looking women, the best food, the best weather,we rule college football, and most Southerners are just more pleasant people than their northern counterparts. When it's my choice I NEVER travel north, there is simply nothing that appeals to me up there. I once had to travel to Connecticut and I couldn't help but wonder how they could attract anyone to actually vacation there.

What if it had been two over weight white guys with shaved heads and a black child in the back. What do you think would have happened with that scenario? Some of you are so ridiculous. The cop acted correctly. Its not racist, when something looks odd!!!!! And its OK for people to think this looks odd!

you guys can justify this if you want, it's ok as long as it happens to other people, but it's pretty scary when black people can get arrested for being with a white person and the justification is, well, this or that could have happened.  if that's a legitimate justification for handcuffing someone and taking them away, when couldn't the cops do it?

but it's all fun and games as long as it happens to those other people.

You're a f-king IDIOT. It wasn't 2 mid 20's black dudes and a 28 yr old white dude. It was 2 mid 20's BLACK DUDES with a 13 YEAR OLD WHITE GIRL F-CKING SLEEPING IN A GAS STATION PARKING LOT.
It's really tough to read your BS when you're so BLINDED by the reality of this.

Let me tell you something moron.

THIS SHOULD HAPPEN MORE OFTEN ANYWHERE ANYTIME WHEN A 13 YR OLD CHILD IS INVOLVED.

DO YOU F-CKING KNOW HOW MANY CHILDREN ARE KIDNNAPPED OR STOLEN AND SOLD.

i don't think our rights have completely disappeared but we do have a right not to be arrested by the government unless there is specific facts giving them probable cause to believe that we are committing a crime and if the police can decide to arrest someone based on no evidence of a crime and what might happen, then that right i just mentioned becomes meaningless.

It's really tough to read your BS when you're so BLINDED by the reality of this.

Let me tell you something moron.

THIS SHOULD HAPPEN MORE OFTEN ANYWHERE ANYTIME WHEN A 13 YR OLD CHILD IS INVOLVED.

DO YOU F-CKING KNOW HOW MANY CHILDREN ARE KIDNNAPPED OR STOLEN AND SOLD.

not sure why you are so angry about it but if this is ok, tell me what crime the guy committed to get arrested.  and if he didn't commit any crime, why was it ok for him to be arrested.

that's terrible that kids are kidnapped but because kids are kidnapped doesn't change the constitution and the fact that people have a right not to be arrested unless there are specific indications he is committing a crime.

because something looks odd to a police officer does not mean you throw the constitution out the window.  again, in our society, people cannot get arrested unless there is specific facts indicating he is committing a crime.  that's true even though bad things happen every day.  tell me what specific facts were present justifying this arrest.  things looking odd or the fact that kids get kidnapped in some cases are not reasons to trash the constitution.

I think Dicky already gave you facts that the cops considered before having 'probable cause' to investigate further.

Basically you are saying we should not detain murderers and rapists since they are still 'innocent until proven guilty'.  And until the facts show that they are actually guilty they should be allowed to roam free.  Is that what you are implying by the facts?

i'm not sure that could be much farther from what i'm saying.  if there is some specific evidence that a person has committed a murder or a rape, then the police are permitted to detain them for further investigation.  that's how our constitution works.  the government needs specific facts indicating a person has committed a crime to arrest them.  i see a lot of anger and profanity in dicky's post but i don't see any specific facts indicating this guy was committing a crime that warranted an arrest.

if you can sort through that post and enumerate the specific facts indicating he was committing a crime to justify an arrest, then maybe we can discuss them on their merits.

I think you can be detained for up to 48 hours with probable cause so that time can be giving to further investigate. I also believe that they could be detained just for the sleeping in a business parking lot.. not sure though, im no lawyer, my only point in this is I don't think the police were being racist in this situation. I believe they were correctly siding on the side of caution with the involvement of a juvenile.

How many Houston cops does it take to change light bulb?

Six: one to do it and five to smash the old bulb to pieces.

I think this is going to fall along political lines.Liberals will go out of their way to prove they aren't racists.

As numerous people mentioned above, a piece of paper doesn't prove all is O.K. Calling some phone number the "suspect" gives you isn't OK.

Cops are there to "Protect and Serve" and to do a little investigating.

    Well-
    I have two teenage daughters-
I would be relieved that this scenario was investigated-although I can't imagine ever being in such-
And I think the police acted in a reasonable manner in this situation-
Unfortunately, child abduction does occur- so the problem really is with the few that have/act on their malicious intent-
The innocent unfortunately do sometimes pay the price for the guilty-

And had they simply gotten a hotel room- this situation likely would never have happened-
That gives me pause as well- wondering how often things like this go virtually unnoticed-

no mention of that pesky constitution in your analysis.  where does that document fall on the political lines.  it's ok to ignore it as long as someone else is being victimized or it just seems like a good idea?  wait until dj hers about this.

Perhaps just do away with "probable cause" altogether....
    I mean, probable to whom?

That dope is not mine... YOU put that pot in my pocket... I did not steal anything... I did not steal this car, I borrowed it from a friend... No I do not know where my friend got the car...

If a police office violates the law he should be punished...

What fascinates me is the mentality that hates and despises the police but wants to live in a safe and secure neighborhood...

I would so love for somebody... anybody that hates and despises the police to post that they actually would want to live in a neighborhood where police were prohibited... ANYBODY...

I also would like someone... anybody to post exactly how the police are suppose to "know" who is up to no good without questioning them??? Telepathy???

What we need is dial a mugger hotline... That way the ones who so hate and despise the police have someone to call if they are robbed, raped or assaulted...

    Clubdirt.

I am beyond angry at your ignorance.

Two BLACK MEN - One White 13 year old MINOR FEMALE.

Asleep in a car in the parking lot of a GAS STATION @ 3 am.

Those TWO BLACK MEN are not the mother and father of that 13 year old WHITE as snow MINOR FEMALE.

WTF would any rationale human being think if they saw that.

I live in MIAMI. I can tell you this if I pulled into a gas station and happened to be out at 3am and looked over and SAW - 2 BLACK MALES and ONE WHITE MINOR FEMALE sleeping in a car you know what happens ?

MY HAND GOES IN MY POCKET AND I REMOVE MY PHONE AND DIAL 911.

    THAT IS GOD DAMN SUSPICIOUS.

I DONT CARE IF YOU'RE BLACK OR WHITE.

EVEN MY BLACK BUDDIES SAID THAT LOOKS FUKED UP AND IT WAS SPOT ON FOR THE COPS TO CHECK IT OUT.

Now the sad thing is what if it was 2 WHITE MEN and a 13 year old BLACK GIRL ?

    I WOULD HOPE THE SAME.
