Just like most years, Big 12 college football betting will be ruled by Oklahoma and Texas. Those two rivals headline the 2020 season win total odds for the conference, followed by few football programs on the rise and a few suffering an expected dip in performance.

Like all sports, the COVID-19 outbreak is threatening to alter the college football schedule, but sports betting operators, like Caesars Entertainment, are trudging forward with their football odds for 2020. Here’s how oddsmakers see things breaking down in the Big 12:

Big 12 College Football 2020 Season Win Totals

Oklahoma again paces this field as the only team with a double-digit win total, though even its number is shaded to the Under. Texas is the only other Big 12 program with a win total of more than 8.5.

Highest Win Total: Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners hit the board at 10, but the Under was -200, so oddsmakers expect it could be difficult for Lincoln Riley’s troops to hit that mark - let alone exceed it. One-year starter Jalen Hurts, who transferred from Alabama, is gone, but Oklahoma returns seven starters on offense and eight on defense.

Lowest Win Total: Kansas Jayhawks

Every team in the Big 12 is slotted to at least have a shot at a bowl bid, with 5.5 or more wins in their season win total – except Kansas. The lowly Jayhawks opened at 3.5 wins, and the Under is -120. In coach Les Miles’ first year, Kansas was 3-9 SU (5-7 ATS), losing eight of its last nine games. The Jayhawks haven’t won more than three games in their last 10 seasons.

Team Of Note: Baylor Bears

Baylor had two great opportunities to beat Oklahoma last season and could very well have been in the College Football Playoff if it had managed to do so. The Bears still finished 11-1 SU (8-4 ATS) in the regular season, before losing to the Sooners in the Big 12 title game, then falling to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

But Caesars books pegged the opening win total at 8, and bettors weren’t banking on the Over.

“Baylor Under has taken multiple bets. We opened 8 (Under -120), now we’re at 7.5 (Over -135),” Caesars sportsbooks director of trading Jeff Davis told Covers. “With games at Oklahoma, Texas and Iowa State, the Bears would need to win the remainder of their schedule to go Over. Looking back, 7.5 was likely the right number.”

How to bet season win totals

Season win totals are somewhat self explanatory: betting on how many wins a team will have that regular season.

Oddsmakers set a projected number of wins for each team - based on past success, returning personnel and strength of schedule - and offer Over/Under betting options, allowing you to wager on if a team will exceed that win total (Over) or fall short of it (Under). This total does not include postseason games, such as the conference championship or bowl games.

On top of the season win total itself, oddsmakers set an assigned cost to the Over and Under bets – also known as vig or juice – depending on the implied probability of the team winning more or less than that total.

For example, oddsmakers calculate TEAM A to win nine games this upcoming season but do feel like there’s a better chance of them winning 10 games rather than 8. Therefor, they set TEAM A with a win total of 9 but increase the vig on the OVER to -130 (bet $1.30 to win $1) and decrease the vig on the UNDER to +110 (win $1.10 for every $1 bet).

OVER 9 WINS (-130)
UNDER 9 WINS (+110)

Season win totals are considered futures betting odds and sportsbooks will take action on season win totals from the time they post the odds until the start of the season. Futures bets are then graded at the end of the season when all results are final.
