Betting Pac-12 college football win total odds: Are the Ducks that dominant?

The Oregon Ducks are the top choice of oddsmakers in the Pac-12, with a 2020 season win total of 9.5. Can Oregon crack double-digit wins and cash in for those betting on the Over?

The Pac-12 seems to be a little off the pace when compared to the top conferences in college football betting, with only the Oregon Ducks projected to flirt with double-digit wins.

Behind the Ducks are a handful of solid Pac-12 teams that could shake up the conference and find themselves among the elite on the college football rankings.

Even with the 2020 college football schedule in serious danger of being postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, sportsbooks like Caesars Entertainment are offering futures odds including season win totals. Here’s the possible pecking order in the Pac-12.

Pac-12 College Football 2020 Season Win Total Odds

The West Coast isn’t the best coast, at least when it comes to regular-season win totals. Not a single team went up with a number above 9.5, and it could be a logjam near the top, with five teams opening at 8 or more wins.

Highest Win Total: Oregon Ducks

Oregon hit the board at 9.5 wins, with the Over a modest -130 favorite to get there. Last regular season, the Ducks went 10-2 SU (6-6 ATS), then beat Utah in the Pac-12 title game and edged Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. Exiting is quarterback Justin Herbert (33 TD passes, 5 INTs), and the offensive line also sheds four of five starters.

Lowest Win Total: Colorado Buffaloes

Colorado is the expected cellar dweller in the Pac-12, opening at 3 (Over -120). The Buffaloes went 5-7 SU (6-6 ATS) last year, the first under coach Mel Tucker, who then packed his bags to take the coaching post at Michigan State. So the Buffs start over once again, turning to Karl Dorrell, who coached UCLA from 2003-2007 and has several assistant coach/offensive coordinator stops over the past 30 years.

Team Of Note: Utah Utes

Utah went 11-1 SU (9-3 ATS) in the 2019-20 regular season and had an outside shot at making the CFP. But that went up in smoke when the Utes, 6.5-point favorites, lost to Oregon 37-15 in the Pac-12 final. The Utes lose QB Tyler Huntley (18 TD passes, 4 INTs) and running back Zack Moss (1,416 rushing yards, 15 rushing TDs).

“The toughest team to make a rating for in the Pac-12 was Utah,” Caesars sportsbooks director of trading Jeff Davis told Covers. “With the Utes losing Huntley and Moss from the offense, and adding (graduate transfer) Jake Bentley from South Carolina, it makes it hard to really know what their offense will be. Bentley and Huntley are different-style QBs.”

Caesars opened Utah at 8.5 (Over -115).

How to bet season win totals

Season win totals are somewhat self explanatory: betting on how many wins a team will have that regular season.

Oddsmakers set a projected number of wins for each team - based on past success, returning personnel and strength of schedule - and offer Over/Under betting options, allowing you to wager on if a team will exceed that win total (Over) or fall short of it (Under). This total does not include postseason games, such as the conference championship or bowl games.

On top of the season win total itself, oddsmakers set an assigned cost to the Over and Under bets – also known as vig or juice – depending on the implied probability of the team winning more or less than that total.

For example, oddsmakers calculate TEAM A to win nine games this upcoming season but do feel like there’s a better chance of them winning 10 games rather than 8. Therefor, they set TEAM A with a win total of 9 but increase the vig on the OVER to -130 (bet $1.30 to win $1) and decrease the vig on the UNDER to +110 (win $1.10 for every $1 bet).

OVER 9 WINS (-130)
UNDER 9 WINS (+110)

Season win totals are considered futures betting odds and sportsbooks will take action on season win totals from the time they post the odds until the start of the season. Futures bets are then graded at the end of the season when all results are final.
