The Montreal Alouettes host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Eastern Semi-Final on Saturday afternoon.
No crossover team has ever made the Grey Cup, and my Blue Bombers vs. Alouettes predictions are betting on the home side to win convincingly.
Here are my best CFL picks for this playoff clash on November 1.
Blue Bombers vs Alouettes prediction
My Blue Bombers vs Alouettes pick: Alouettes -6.5 (-115 at BET99)
These teams faced off last week, with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers prevailing 19-10 at home. That said, there isn't much to take from that contest since both sides rested key starters in what was a meaningless game.
The Montreal Alouettes looked like the best team in the CFL at the start of the season before being decimated by injuries. They played without franchise quarterback Davis Alexander, All-Star left tackle Nick Callender, and their two best wide receivers for a significant chunk of time.
All four players are back in the lineup and playing at a high level, while the run game has been ignited by running back Stevie Scott. With the Als the healthiest they’ve been all year, they rattled off five straight wins, including four by double digits, before last week’s season finale.
Meanwhile, the Bombers have struggled with consistency all year. We especially saw that towards the end of the season, when they lost to the Elks and barely beat the Roughriders' B Team in crucial games.
There's been atrocious play-calling from first-year offensive coordinator Jason Hogan and bad decision-making from quarterback Zach Collaros. Winnipeg ranks second-last in the CFL in turnovers (45) and turnover margin (-11), and the pass protection has been shaky.
That spells trouble against an Als squad that boasts a +8 turnover ratio and is tied for the league lead with 45 sacks. Expect the Als to ride their momentum into the playoffs with a win and cover on Saturday.
Blue Bombers vs Alouettes same-game parlay (SGP)
With the Blue Bombers' poor play-calling and shaky QB play, they'll have a tough time moving the ball against a stingy Alouettes defense.
That said, Winnipeg also has a strong defense that showed improved play down the stretch. The Bombers finished the regular season with the best second-down defense and the highest opponent 2-and-out rate in the CFL.
There's also a chance of rain with winds nearing 24 km/h, which could affect the ability of both teams to pass the ball downfield. That has me leaning towards the Under 48.5 in this SGP.
