Week 8 in the CFL kicks off tonight with a clash between the Calgary Stampers and Montreal Alouettes at McMahon Stadium.
These squads are both atop the Grey Cup futures board, but with Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander sidelined by a hamstring injury, my Alouettes vs. Stampeders predictions are backing the home side.
Here are my best free CFL picks and predictions for this Week 8 showdown on Thursday, July 24.
Alouettes vs Stampeders prediction
My Alouettes vs Stampeders pick: Stampeders -6 (-110 at BET99)
The Calgary Stampeders are 5-1 straight up and against the spread, with their only loss coming in ugly weather. The bubble has to pop eventually, but I doubt it will happen here.
They're in a far better spot than the last two weeks when they visited Regina and Winnipeg, the toughest road venues in the CFL. The Riders and Bombers were fresh off byes, but it didn't matter, as Calgary won by double-digits as an underdog in both games.
This time, the Stamps host a Montreal Alouettes squad missing QB Davis Alexander and WR Tyson Philpot. Alexander has looked like an MOP candidate when healthy, and there's been a significant drop-off with McLeod Bethel-Thompson under center.
The Als will struggle to move the ball against a Calgary stop unit that has improved massively under new defensive coordinator Bob Slowik. The Stamps lead the league in scoring defense (18.5 points per game allowed), yards allowed per pass attempt (7.0), and turnovers forced (19).
On offense, they have the highest-graded line in the league, per PFF, which has helped Vernon Adams Jr. and Dedrick Mills thrive. Adams is second in the CFL in passing yards (1,720) while ranking first in 30+ yard downfield completions (14). Mills is second in the league in rushing yards (466) with a league-high 14 runs of 10+ yards.
They'll make enough big plays to generate points against a tough Als defense and cover the spread.
Alouettes vs Stampeders same-game parlay (SGP)
I mentioned how good Calgary's defense has been, but Montreal also has a strong stop unit and gets top corner Lorenzo Burns back after a two-game absence.
The Als lead the league in sacks (16) and yards allowed per play (5.8). They are also second in the league in ppg allowed (22.8) and second-down conversion rate — just behind the Stamps in both categories. This game has all the makings of a defensive battle.
