Who will win Mexico vs Ecuador: Ecuador to advance (+160)
Coming into this World Cup, I had Ecuador as one of my dark horses, and my feelings haven’t changed through three games.
Their strength is in defense, with experience and talent in abundance. The back four feature two players who played in this season's Champions League Final, and midfielder Moises Caicedo can screen them and stop Mexico creating chances for their front three.
Mexico have an incredible record in competitive games at the Azteca, but Ecuador is also used to playing at altitude. That really evens the playing field, and with kickoff late in the day, the temperatures are also unlikely to be an issue.
That bodes well for Ecuador’s press, and they can pressure a Mexico team that have been flattered by their opposition so far.
We saw Ecuador beat Germany despite having just 39% possession, and that game can be the blueprint here. They’ll allow Mexico the ball, but they can then heavily press them, and restrict them to low-value chances, like they did vs. the Germans.

Ecuador come into this game looking to play the role of spoiler, so expect them to sit back, soak up pressure, and then use their speed on the flanks to counter Mexico.
If Ecuador had a world-class striker, they’d be a serious threat in this tournament. But the reality is that they’re fairly toothless on the whole, meaning we shouldn’t see many goals.
The Mexicans can point to six goals in the group stages, but they never really looked that dangerous, and scored against a South Africa team who’d been hit with red cards, and a South Korea team who were melting away.
Their defense is also good, and hasn’t conceded a goal yet.
The odds on Under 2.5 goals are so poor that it’s not really worth taking them on. Instead, I’m going for Under 1.5 goals, which stands a real chance given the lack of striking talent on both teams and Ecuador’s world-class defense.
Mexico vs Ecuador goal scorer pick: Enner Valencia (+296)
Enner Valencia plays in Mexico for Pachuca, but is the man most likely to break their hearts on Tuesday.
The 36-year old Ecuador striker has yet to score through three games, but he’s been unfortunate and has an xG of 2.14, so we’re due some positive regression.
He’s still quick, despite his aging years, and can get in behind a Mexico team that has shown signs of overcommitting forward in other games in the tournament. He’s averaging four shots per game and is the leading man for an Ecuadorian team built for the counterattack.
