Puppy Bowl rules and format

The Puppy Bowl features several pup-ticipants from each team in a model stadium, with an assortment of dog toys on the playing surface, and the dogs are let loose!

Puppy Bowl scoring

The scoring is as follows:

  • Touchdowns are scored when a puppy carries any of the toys in either of the two end zones (worth seven points)
  • "Double touchdowns" can happen when a pup scores one touchdown, then immediately zooms to the other end zone with the same toy.
  • "Team touchdowns" occur when two puppies carry the same toy into the end zone
  • Field goals are scored when a puppy kicks or pushes a toy into either end zone (worth three points)

Puppy Bowl penalties

Much like human football, "penalties" are also a part of the game (administered by the referee):

  • Paws interference
  • Terrorizing the ref
  • Pancaking
  • Ruff sides
  • Dog-collar tackle
  • Neutral bone infraction

Timeouts are also called if water bowls are empty, there are cases of unnecessary ruffness (when puppies begin to fight), or any puppy decides to treat the playing surface like a bathroom.

Puppy Bowl awards

The Puppy Bowl also features an official broadcast crew, with Steve Levi and Taylor Rooks on the call in 2025, an at the end of the game awards are given to:

  1. Most Valuable Puppy

  2. Underdog Award (for the pup that surprises viewers with an outstanding performance)

  3. Krypto Super Play Award (special award featuring writer/director James Gunn, for the puppy that displays the most extraordinary abilities on the field).
