Shipp finished with 60 catches for 671 yards and six touchdowns last season, emerging as one of the few reliable pieces in the Tar Heels’ passing game. His production also improved considerably down the stretch, clearing 59.5 receiving yards in five of his final six games.
The quarterback change is an obvious boost for him. Edwards has already demonstrated that he can support productive receivers at this level while Petrino should create more opportunities for North Carolina to attack vertically rather than relying on the conservative passing game we saw last season.
Jeremy Payne has already showed what he can do with increased volume, rushing for 623 yards while averaging 5.7 yards per carry despite receiving only 110 attempts last season.
His late-season workload also provided a glimpse of what could be coming, including 103 rushing yards against Houston and 174 against Cincinnati. North Carolina presents the matchup to attack. The Tar Heels ranked 113th nationally in defensive EPA per rush last season and lost important pieces from the front seven.
Lincoln Riley has a long history of running up the score against Group of Six schools, and San Jose State could be the latest victim. USC has dominated these matchups, averaging 65 points while winning by 46.6 points in three of the last four season openers against Group of Six opponents. With what should be one of USC's best defenses in years, expect the Trojans to put on a show this weekend.
Tanook Hines will likely lead the Trojans in receiving this season, but a Week 0 game with a 38.5-point spread when you returned to practice only a week ago isn't conducive to statistical dominance. Expect a snap count and to see plenty of playing time for star freshmen Trent Mosley, Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, Ethan Feaster) and talented backups (Zacharyus Williams).
CJ Bailey is back for NC State, behind an improved offensive line and with plenty of knowledge of Dave Doeren's playbook.
The Wolfpack ranked 21st in ned adjusted EPA/play last season behind his playmaking ability.
He burned the Cavaliers last season, and his experience gives the Wolfpack a real edge in a game that should be fairly close.
The North Carolina State Wolfpack always seem to have plenty of hype surrounding them, and this year is no different. While buying into the hype again could come back to bite us, returning star quarterback CJ Bailey gives plenty of reason to believe this team can take a step forward. The Wolfpack also add tight ends Vander Poog and Hunter Provience, who could provide Bailey with reliable safety blankets. Last season, NC State was one of three FBS teams with tight ends accounting for 80 targets and 10 touchdowns. Meanwhile, Virginia head coach Tony Elliott faces another major rebuild, creating concerns over familiarity and continuity early on.
The North Dakota State Bison come into the FBS ranks with plenty of confidence, as the program went 9-4 against FBS opponents - including several wins against power conference teams - during its time in the FCS. They've been absolutely dominant at home, even against solid competition, going 38-2 in FCS playoff games. Arguably, this first game isn't even a step up in competition. While the Jacksonville State Gamecocks have been highly successful in Conference USA play, some power rankings (such as Sagarin) have rated that league below the Missouri Valley Conference - where NDSU played in FCS - in the last couple seasons.
Jacksonville State lost the nation's leading rusher, Cam Cook, and now plays a North Dakota State team making its FBS debut. As an FCS program, the Bison beat plenty of FBS teams, including several P4 programs. With multiple starters back on the O-line and D-line, NDSU should bully its way to a victory at the Fargo Dome.
Nick Devereaux became Kim's biggest-play target during the second half of last season, and that connection gets a favorable opening assignment.
Devereaux scored six of his seven touchdowns over Eastern Michigan's final five games and returns as the Eagles' leading receiver. Sacramento State upgraded its secondary through the portal, but most of that group is still light on meaningful college experience, while the pass rush is being rebuilt almost completely.
The Eagles return fifth-year quarterback Noah Kim after he led the MAC with 2,817 passing yards, along with his top receiving options. The Hornets are the opposite of that in any conventional sense with a first-year coaching staff and a roster undergoing a total personnel overhaul. Eastern Michigan allowed only 11 sacks last season, while Sacramento State lost key pieces from an FCS defensive front that ranked sixth nationally in sacks.
EMU's awful 2025 run defense makes this edge smaller, but Sacramento State's effective rushing attack came from a different team. I'm siding with the known commodity that should be able to keep its offense on schedule.
This is a major misprice on the most likely WR1 for Hawai'i if Pofele Ashlock is out. Quarterback Micah Alejado was named the Mountain West Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, so expectations are high for this passing game after nearly reaching 300 yards per game last season. Harris is expected to star in the slot, the most valuable position in the Run-and-Shoot from a production standpoint.
Without their top five pass-catchers from a season ago, Hawai'i's Run-and-Shoot won't click against a Stanford defense ranking 23rd in returning production. Stanford's slow, run-heavy offensive approach will keep the clock ticking.
New Mexico State has played two P4 opponents during Tony Sanchez's tenure, in combined to score 12 points in those games. The Aggies have finished ranked outside the Top 100 in PPG in both of Sanchez's seasons. And Florida State has a projected Top 30 defense by SP+ and should apply plenty of pressure on Furman transfer QB Trey Hedden.
Daniels has gone Over this number in 10 of his last 12 starts. He averaged 81.7 rushing yards in his three starts for Auburn last year and this is a soft matchup, as NMSU ranked 96th in PFF's rush defense grade and 106th in front-seven havoc and now checks in at 117th in returning defensive production.
In Dan Mullen's first season leading UNLV last year, the Rebels scored 31+ points in 10 of 13 games against non-P4 opponents. Under new head coach Charles Huff, Memphis' entire starting defense is made up of transfers, and that lack of continuity could be a problem early. Look for star UNLV running back Jai'Den Thomas to power the Rebels to plenty of points - he had UNLV ranked Top 10 nationally in EPA per rush last year.
UNLV finished 127th nationally in EPA/rush allowed and 93rd in rushing success rate allowed last season while surrendering 175.1 rushing yards per game. Memphis brings in Decker, whose Old Dominion offense finished 14th nationally in total offense behind a ground game.
Hayden has 1,185 career rushing yards from stops at Ohio State and Colorado and is expected to lead the Memphis backfield. With Memphis sorting through a quarterback competition, Decker has every reason to establish the run early. At 60.5, the matchup still favors the Over.
Former Mississippi head coach Lane Kiffin will take his new team, LSU, into Oxford. Considering the controversial way he left the Rebels prior to the playoffs last year, there might not be a more hostile environment in college football this season. It’s a game worthy of giving the home team more than three points of home-field advantage.
Our experts and prediction models are hard at work analyzing the data. Check back shortly for today's picks, or explore our Computer Picks for inspiration.
The table above lets you know how profitable and helpful our sports betting computer picks have been across the last 100 college football games played. Our NCAAF computer picks use expert data to review odds and generate moneyline, spread, and total bets for every game throughout the season.
Listed in the table are unit details, which show the total profit or loss based on a bettor placing $100 on each of the last 100 college football picks made by the computer, on both the opening and closing lines.
Take advantage of these free college football picks before you wager any money at sportsbooks.
As human beings, we're bound to be biased with our picks and potentially fall into the trap of swinging with the public. With advanced stats growing in popularity and getting harder to track, college football computer predictions are starting to become more relied on.
Betting on a moneyline simply means you're picking the outright winner of the game, regardless of the scoring margin or total. If the team you choose wins, then your bet hits. Here's what it will look like over at your favorite sportsbook:
| Team | Moneyline |
|---|---|
| Alabama Crimson Tide | -120 |
| Missouri Tigers | +150 |
In this case, Alabama is favored to win the game as its moneyline odds have a minus sign (-) in front of the number. The favorites will have the minus sign present, and the underdogs will have a plus sign (+). Easy, right?
Betting the spread gives your bet a bit more breathing room. Here, you don't need to sweat out a team to win. Instead, you can wager on the point differential on the scoreboard.
Betting on the spread is a good idea when the moneyline profits aren't enticing. There's no point betting on Alabama as a heavy -1500 favorite over Missouri. But taking Missouri to keep the scoring margin within a certain frame will get you more bang for your buck.
| Team | Spread |
|---|---|
| Alabama Crimson Tide | -24.5 (-105) |
| Missouri Tigers | +24.5 (-115) |
In this example, the Tide are favored to dominate their game against Missouri, outperforming them by at least 24.5 points.
If Alabama does win by more than 25 points, that would mean the Crimson Tide covered the spread. But if the Tide won by just 20 points, then that would mean the Tigers "covered the spread" instead.
If you think the outcome of a game could flip in either direction, then an Over/Under is the way to go. This bet relies on the combined score from both teams and whether it goes Over or Under the point total listed at sportsbooks. Then, who cares who wins?
| Team | Total |
|---|---|
| Alabama Crimson Tide | O 52.5 (-110) |
| Missouri Tigers | U 52.5 (-110) |
In this example, oddsmakers have set the total score for the game at 52.5 points. The choice is now up to you. If you think the Tide and Tigers will score a combined total of more than 52.5 points, 53 points or more, then pick the Over. If you're thinking otherwise, then bet the Under, and the bet will hit if they score fewer than 52.5 points.
