Tampa Bay Rays vs Toronto Blue Jays Box Score on Jul 28, 2019

The visiting Tampa Bay Rays overcame a seven-run deficit and scored the go-ahead run in the ninth on Joey Wendle's bases-loaded groundout to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-9 on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Jays led 8-1 after five innings in the rubber match of the three-game series, but the Rays tied the game with three runs on two homers in the eighth.

The Blue Jays overcame a seven-run deficit Saturday to win 10-9 in 12 innings.

The teams also entered the game with a pending trade that would send infielder Eric Sogard from Toronto to Tampa Bay. Sogard did not play Sunday.

The Rays loaded the bases on two walks and a single against Daniel Hudson (6-3) with one out in the ninth. Wendle drove in a run on a groundout to second against Derek Law to give Tampa Bay a 10-9 lead.

Chaz Roe (1-3) pitched a perfect eighth to earn the win.

Oliver Drake retired the first batter in the bottom of the ninth and Diego Castillo struck out the final two batters to earn his eighth save.

Ji-Man Choi, Guillermo Heredia and Willy Adames homered for the Rays.

Justin Smoak and Billy McKinney homered and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had four RBIs for the Blue Jays.

Toronto starter Aaron Sanchez allowed four runs, six hits and no walks while striking out 10 in 5 2/3 innings and has not won since April 27, a span of 17 starts.

Rays starter Yonny Chirinos allowed seven runs, eight hits and three walks in four-plus innings.

Sanchez struck out his first six batters, a club record to start a game.

The Rays did not have a base runner until Choi singled to lead off the fourth to end a string of 30 straight batters retired by Toronto pitchers starting in Saturday's game.

Smoak led off the second with his 18th homer of the season. McKinney walked with two out and scored on a double by Teoscar Hernandez.

The Blue Jays scored twice in the third. Cavan Biggio and Freddy Galvis singled. Biggio scored from third on a wild pitch when Lourdes Gurriel Jr. struck out, and Guerrero hit an RBI single.

Nate Lowe led off the fifth with a double to left and scored on Matt Duffy's single to left.

Toronto scored four in their fifth. Gurriel led off with an infield single and Smoak walked. They moved to second and third on a balk and scored on Guerrero's single. Adam Kolarek replaced Chirinos and allowed McKinney's seventh homer.

The Rays scored three in the sixth. Choi and Tommy Pham singled and scored on Travis d'Arnaud's two-out double. Justin Shafer replaced Sanchez and yielded Lowe's RBI single.

Gurriel singled and scored on Guerrero's double against Jake Faria in the bottom of the sixth.

The Rays scored two in the seventh. Joe Biagini walked Adames with one out and allowed Choi's 10th homer of the season. Pham was out trying for a double on his hit to right and left the game with a sprained right hand.

David Phelps allowed three runs on two home runs in the eighth as the Rays tied the game 9-9. Wendle singled and Heredia hit his third homer and Adames followed with his 12th.
