New York Yankees vs Los Angeles Angels Box Score on Aug 30, 2021

Jack Mayfield hit a grand slam and Shohei Ohtani socked his major-league-leading 42nd home run, but an RBI single by Juan Lagares ultimately lifted the Los Angeles Angels to an 8-7 victory over the New York Yankees on Monday in Anaheim, Calif.

Lagares, who also had an RBI triple and another single in the game, came to the plate in the eighth inning with two outs and Brandon Marsh on third base.

Lagares ripped a 2-2 slider from Clay Holmes into left field to drive in Marsh. Lagares was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double, but the damage had been done.

After winning 13 in a row, the Yankees have lost three straight.

Angels closer Raisel Iglesias retired DJ LeMahieu, Anthony Rizzo and Aaron Judge in order in the ninth for his 28th save. Los Angeles has won two in a row after dropping six of the previous seven.

LeMahieu, Rizzo, Judge and Giancarlo Stanton each had two hits for the Yankees. Stanton homered and knocked in three runs.

The Yankees jumped out to a lead in the first inning with two runs against Angels opener Mike Mayers, the first of seven pitchers in a bullpen game. LeMahieu opened the game with a double and Rizzo followed with an RBI double.

After a single by Judge, Stanton grounded into a double play, allowing Rizzo to score and give New York a 2-0 lead.

Yankees starter Corey Kluber held the Angels hitless through three innings before Los Angeles erupted for five runs in the fourth. Jo Adell drove in the first run with a single before the Angels loaded the bases, Max Stassi working a walk to set the stage for Mayfield.

Mayfield, starting at shortstop in place of Jose Iglesias, hit the first pitch of the at-bat -- a hanging breaking ball -- over the fence in left field for his first career grand slam and a 5-2 lead.

It didn't take long for the Yankees to get the runs back, tying the game in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by LeMahieu, Judge and Stanton off Angels relievers Jose Quijada and Steve Cishek.

The Angels regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Ohtani led off with a home run against former Angel Andrew Heaney. Los Angeles increased the lead to 7-5 in the sixth on an RBI triple by Lagares.

The Yankees, though, rallied again, getting a two-run homer from Stanton in the seventh to tie the game at 7-7.

Angels reliever Junior Guerra (5-2) earned the victory despite serving up Stanton's homer. Wandy Peralta (4-3) took the loss.
