Two bitter rivals will square off in the Pacific Northwest when the Portland Timbers play host to the Seattle Sounders at Providence Park.

The 123rd meeting between the Cascadia Cup foes sees the Timbers sitting just five points off the top spot in the Western Conference, with just one loss in their last 10 league matches. The Sounders are coming off a 4-0 loss to LAFC with a heavily rotated squad and will be looking to pull ahead of the Timbers in the table.

My Timbers vs. Sounders predictions dive into why the way Seattle should generate a high volume of set-piece opportunities tonight.

Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders picks and predictions

My Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders best bet: Sounders to have the most corners (+100 at FanDuel)

The Portland Timbers enter tonight without conceding a goal in their last two matches. Their two clean sheets against Sporting KC and Real Salt Lake were the product of a concerted effort to shore up their defense by manager Phil Neville.

Leakiness at the back and struggles in the midfield are a key reason why the Timbers have allowed 246 shots from live passes this season, fourth-most in MLS. Only six teams have conceded more than their 13.38 shots per 90 minutes.

The high shot totals and an emphasis on defending more compactly have led to a correlated byproduct. Portland opponents have taken 70 corner kicks this season, tied for the fifth-most allowed by any team.

Only San Jose and Vancouver have attempted more shots per 90 minutes this season than the Sounders. Those shots have led to 76 corner kicks from the Sounders, fourth-most in the league this season, as they’ve had the fifth-most blocked shots of any team.

Portland ranks third in MLS for most touches inside its own defensive third and has allowed the fourth-most touches in its defensive final third. The Sounders should have plenty of opportunities to shoot against a defense that will be looking to stay between the ball and the goal, and it will lead to them having more corners than their opponent when the final whistle blows.

Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders same-game parlay (SGP)

Sounders to have the most corners

Both teams to score - Yes

Antony to have 2+ shots

As we can’t parlay our best bet, we’ll get a bit creative here and take the Sounders to take at least two more corners than the Timbers.

The Sounders have frequently had at least two more corners than their opponents in matches this season, and Portland is going to be focused on defending its net and extending the clean sheet run.

Clean sheets aren’t a common thing for either of these sides. Seattle has conceded in four straight, while Portland’s two consecutive shutouts came against very poor attacking sides. Neither team will be held scoreless tonight.

One player for the Timbers who has no problem letting fly is Antony. Whether he’s lined up at wingback, fullback, central midfield, or winger, he’s always ready to attempt a shot. He’s attempted at least two shots in three straight matches and will get off a couple chances in this one.
