The FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16 begins on Saturday, with Benfica and Chelsea’s meeting in Charlotte being the most exciting of the two games.

Benfica topped their group, with Chelsea second in theirs. However, my Chelsea vs. Benfica predictions and FIFA Club World Cup free picks believe the English club are rightful favorites and expect Chelsea to win on June 28.

Chelsea vs Benfica picks and predictions

My Chelsea vs Benfica best bet: Chelsea to win (+105 at bet365)

Benfica did exceptionally well to top Group C, finishing a point ahead of Bayern Munich thanks to a 1-0 win over the German side on the final game day of the group stage. They outperformed Bayern in that game, but the Bavarians had a goal ruled off and, in truth, should have scored more.

The other two games in the group were far less impressive.

Benfica beat Auckland City in a game that was as unconvincing as a 6-0 win can look, with the team toiling in the first half to break down the Australians. Their 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors was saved thanks to an 84th minute goal from Nicolas Otamendi, but Boca played with one less man for the bulk of the second half, and the game finished with two Boca players and one Benfica player sent off.

Just like the Portuguese team, we’ve seen Chelsea improve as the tournament has gone along.

They beat a poor LAFC team in the first game before getting beaten comfortably by Flamengo in Matchday 2, with the Brazilian outfit excelling thanks to their familiarity with the weather conditions. Chelsea then beat ES Tunis 3-0 in their strongest performance so far, one which saw them finally look more coherent in their play.

The addition of Liam Delap, a summer signing from Ipswich, gave them a physical output up top and we got to see Noni Madueke and Christopher Nkunku at their best. Chelsea rested some players in that game, such as Levi Colwill, Marc Cucurella and their star player, Cole Palmer, but we should see all three return to the lineup here.

Chelsea had a good run of form down the stretch to end their Premier League season, finishing fourth and sealing a Champions League spot. They then beat Real Betis 4-1 in the final of the Europa Conference League to win silverware before flying to the US for this Club World Cup. They’re a team heating up at just the right time.

Chelsea have the best squad, they have recent experience of going deep and winning a cup competition, and they come into this well rested. If you can get plus money on a Chelsea win, then it’s a must-bet for Saturday’s game.

Chelsea to win

Liam Delap to score

Benfica Under 2 goals

In addition to the best bet, we’re going to back Delap to score. The 22-year old scored his first Chelsea goal in their last game, which was just his second start for the club since his move from Ipswich.

He had a great season for Ipswich with 12 goals in the Premier League for the relegated club, and he’s started excellently for his new team. Delap gives Chelsea a physical No. 9 that they haven’t had in a number of years, and the team immediately looked better with him leading the line.

Benfica have scored nine goals in three games so far, but six were put past a terrible Auckland City side. Chelsea have two clean sheets and should be far harder to score against.
