Expert Premier League moneyline picks for Matchweek 7
Everton vs Chelsea pick: Everton
Chelsea's five-goal outburst against Bournemouth will attract attention, but their 15 league goals have come from just 8.84 expected goals. Everton, unbeaten through six matches, have conceded only five times and should provide a much tougher defensive test.
Neither side played in Europe this week, so rest shouldn't decide this matchup. Everton's route is to stay compact, make Chelsea work for openings, and attack the space when the visitors push forward. At 31%, I'll take the home underdog.
Brentford vs Liverpool pick: Brentford
Liverpool's 6-3 Champions League win at LASK on Wednesday was an attacking statement, but conceding three times is hardly ideal preparation for an unbeaten Brentford side. The Reds also had to travel to Austria, while the Bees have had a full week to prepare.
Brentford don't need to match Liverpool's possession to hurt them. Their best chance is to absorb pressure, then attack quickly when Liverpool commit numbers forward. The visitors' firepower worries me, but at 41%, I still prefer the fresher hosts.
Fulham vs Hull City pick: Fulham
Fulham have just two points, but their six goals from 9.71 expected goals suggest they're generating enough chances to win games. Hull have nine points despite producing only 6.53 xG, and neither club had a European match to interrupt its preparation.
At Craven Cottage, Fulham should be able to push Hull back and spend more time in attacking areas. Finishing remains the obvious concern, but this is a good opponent against which to correct it. I'll stick with Fulham at 59%.
Manchester City vs Ipswich Town pick: Manchester City
City's perfect league start hit a speed bump in Europe, with PSG winning 4-2 at the Etihad on Wednesday. Conceding four is a warning, and the short turnaround gives Ipswich a reason to believe they can threaten in transition.
Still, Ipswich have conceded 12 goals in six league games, and absorbing City's pressure for 90 minutes is a much tougher assignment than taking advantage of one poor European performance. Rotation is worth watching, but City remain my pick at 80%, even if that price offers little margin.
Newcastle United vs Aston Villa pick: Draw
Aston Villa's 6-0 Champions League demolition of Fenerbahce gives them an enormous confidence boost after a sluggish league start. But it also came Wednesday, leaving a shorter recovery window than Newcastle, who have had all week to respond to their 4-1 defeat at Coventry.
Newcastle's defense has conceded 13 league goals, so Villa will fancy their chances on the break. The hosts should have the fresher legs and more possession, though, creating a genuine tug-of-war. I'll keep the draw at 26%.
Bournemouth vs Sunderland pick: Bournemouth
Both teams played in the Europa League on Thursday, but their workloads were not equal. Bournemouth beat Sturm Graz 3-0 at home, while Sunderland needed a stoppage-time winner to beat Torreense 2-1 in Portugal. The visitors now face travel and a short turnaround before Sunday's trip to the south coast.
Bournemouth finally have a confidence-building win, and their defensive numbers have been better than their league results. If they can start quickly against tired legs, this is an opportunity to earn their first league victory. I'll back the Cherries at 48%.
Brighton vs Crystal Palace pick: Brighton
Brighton and Palace both played Thursday, but their European nights looked very different. Brighton rotated heavily and still beat Kauno Zalgiris 4-0 at home; Palace traveled to Lyon and lost 3-2 after falling three goals behind.
That matters for Sunday. Brighton can restore several rested regulars, while Palace face another demanding outing with less recovery time and a defense that has allowed a league-high 13.85 expected goals. Brighton's attack should find openings, making the hosts my pick at 62%.
Leeds United vs Manchester United pick: Manchester United
Manchester United's 2-0 Champions League loss at Atletico Madrid on Tuesday was another setback, but at least they have an extra recovery day before Sunday's trip to Leeds. Their league performances have also been better than their six points suggest, with an 11.11-to-6.87 expected-goals advantage.
Elland Road will be hostile, and Leeds should press aggressively. That can help United if they escape the first wave and attack the gaps behind it. I'm still backing the visitors at 33%, but the final team news matters.
Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal pick: Arsenal
Arsenal's 3-0 Champions League win over Lille on Tuesday was a much cleaner European outing than several of their rivals managed. They also have until Sunday to recover, while Nottingham Forest have spent the week preparing for one of the league's strongest defenses.
Forest have scored just five times from 10.13 expected goals, so a better finishing day is possible. But Arsenal have allowed only 5.31 xGA in six league matches and rarely give opponents easy looks. I'll stay with the champions at 60%.
Tottenham vs Coventry City pick: Draw
Tottenham's three league goals in six matches are difficult to overlook, especially when the market still asks you to trust them as heavy home favorites. Coventry, meanwhile, arrive buoyed by a 4-1 win over Newcastle and have had a full week to prepare.
Neither team played in Europe this week, and Monday's kickoff removes any short-rest excuse. Spurs should have more of the ball, but Coventry have shown they can punish defensive mistakes. Until Tottenham prove they can turn possession into goals, the draw at 21% remains my play.
