Maine is one of the most exciting states in the run-up to the 2026 Midterm elections. Maine has one of the most important Senate seats up this year, with Democrats desperate to finally unseat Republican incumbent Susan Collins, who has held the seat for 30 years. Democrats have had to contend with scandal and a candidate switch, plus losing an incumbent in the crucial 2nd House District.

With a Governor’s election also on the docket, Maine is one of the most important states for 2026 Midterm odds.

Maine Senate race odds 2026

The country's most controversial race: Democrats narrowly avoided disaster. Their original nominee, Graham Platner, an oyster fisherman with a history of controversial remarks on Reddit and a tattoo of a Nazi symbol, left the race due to allegations of sexual assault. Democrats replaced him with Troy Jackson, a long-time state legislator with a record of winning in Republican areas.

On the other side is Susan Collins, who has won five terms in this seat since 1996. Collins is the only Senate Republican to represent a state that voted for Kamala Harris in 2024, making her a key target for Democrats but also one of the Senate’s best electoral performers. Markets think Jackson can pull off the flip, but Collins won from an underdog position in 2020.

Maine House race odds 2026

Democrat Jared Golden won Maine's 2nd District in 2018 and held it for the next three elections, despite the district voting for Donald Trump three times. He was a top Republican target, but with Golden retiring, Republicans are favored to win the seat. Democrats are trying to hold on to it to strengthen their chances of House control, but the seat’s red hue and lack of an incumbent make it Republicans’ best chance to gain a seat in 2026.

Maine Governor and statewide election odds

Democrats are overwhelmingly likely to hold Maine's governorship this year. Janet Mills is term-limited, but Democratic nominee Hannah Pingree is overwhelmingly likely to win. The daughter of the member for Maine’s 1st District, Pingree is a well-known figure in Maine politics and is favored to hold the governorship in a state that Kamala Harris won by almost 7% in 2024.

Maine polls vs. prediction market odds

Source type What it shows Limitation
Polls Voter preference at a specific moment Can lag events or miss turnout shifts
Prediction markets Trader-implied probability Can be affected by liquidity, volume and participant bias
Forecasts Model-based projection Assumptions vary by model
Fundraising reports Campaign strength and donor support Does not always translate to votes

Prediction market sites and polls are measuring different things and are not interchangeable. Polls are snapshots of voters’ intentions at a given time, while prediction markets are a live-updating indicator of market probabilities. When breaking news and key information emerge, prediction markets can move first, before polls show any impact.

Why Maine matters in the 2026 midterms

Maine matters to the 2026 midterms for two reasons. The Senate seat - the only Republican seat in a state that voted for Kamala Harris in 2024 - is hugely important for Democratic hopes of winning back the Senate. Because it's a blue state at both the Presidential and Gubernatorial level, it is a top priority for Democrats if they want to control the Senate.

Democrats are looking likely to hold the Governorship, but they’re also likely to lose a House seat. Despite the favorable overall environment, with Democrat Jared Golden retiring in the 2nd District, Republicans are looking to gain the Trump-won seat and add a bit of breathing room in their race to hold the House.
