Expert NHL moneyline picks: Nov. 3
Mammoth vs. Maple Leafs pick: Maple Leafs
Two high-scoring teams with power plays ranking inside the top six? Sign me up. However, I'm giving the Toronto Maple Leafs the edge in this one, thanks to a significant advantage on the penalty kill. Toronto boasts the NHL's second-ranked unit, while Utah sits 28th, killing off penalties at an abysmal 68.7% clip.
Sergei Bobrovsky bounce-back game, anyone?
Jets vs. Canadiens pick: Canadiens
How can you see the Canadiens on the schedule and not back the best story in hockey? Rookie netminder Jacob Fowler ranks second in the NHL with 9.8 goals saved above expected, and Montreal is playing incredible hockey in front of him, riding a five-game winning streak. The Jets, meanwhile? They've dropped nine straight games. They just aren't a very good hockey team right now.
Red Wings vs. Lightning pick: Lightning
Another case of a strong team taking on an NHL bottom-feeder. What's wrong with the Red Wings? They simply can't find the back of the net, averaging just 2.93 goals per game with a penalty kill ranking near the bottom of the league. If they take a handful of trips to the sin bin tonight, expect the Lightning to capitalize.
Blues vs. Rangers pick: Blues
The Rangers are in a tailspin, and it won't get any easier against a surprisingly good Blues team. New York has lost four straight, goaltender Dylan Garand has absolutely lost the plot, and St. Louis' special teams are strong. I'll ride with them to kick the Rangers while they're down.
Wild vs. Flyers pick: Wild
The Wild are one of the most structured teams in hockey. Jesper Wallstedt leads the NHL in goals saved above expected with the Wild allowing just 2.25 goals per game, third-best in the league. Meanwhile, the Flyers rank dead-last in goals per game. This one shouldn't be close, bank on it.
Golden Knights vs. Penguins pick: Golden Knights
The Golden Knights are one of the most formidable teams in hockey, but this matchup should be decided at five-on-five. Pittsburgh boasts one of the league's best penalty kills, which could neutralize Vegas' potent power play. Still, the Knights rank second in the NHL in expected goals this season, and that's an edge I'm willing to ride.
Stars vs. Capitals pick: Stars
This is one of the best games on the slate, with two heavyweights going head-to-head. I'm riding with the best defense known to the sport, with the Stars ranking first in goals allowed and shots on goal allowed, all while owning the best penalty kill in hockey. Defense wins championships, people.
Avalanche vs. Blue Jackets pick: Avalanche
I realize the Avalanche played just yesterday and are on a travel day, but Colorado is playing the best hockey of its season, winners of three straight. They take on a Blue Jackets team ranked dead last in expected goals for - and that's not a good metric to be last in if you want to win a hockey game against a juggernaut.
Oilers vs. Devils pick: Oilers
I get it, we all love the Devils now that they have Connor Hellebuyck in the fold, but the fact the Oilers are 42% underdogs is just genuinely insane to me. At this price, I'll roll with the best player in the history of the game and an offense scoring over four goals per game.
Hurricanes vs. Predators pick: Hurricanes
We ride with Pyotr Kochetkov until the wheels fall off. Yes, the Hurricanes netminder is now 10-0-0 with a .929 save percentage, and is anchoring a team ranked first in expected goals for with the best record in hockey. Need I say more?
Ducks vs. Canucks pick: Ducks
In a game where we should see a ton of goals, I'm backing a team with more offensive firepower. The Ducks have a strong, young core with Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier at the forefront; they both should be able to figure out Leevi Merilainen, who has a -12.1 goals saved above expected, the worst mark in the NHL.
Today's NHL moneyline combo
The math just isn't adding up for me, so we're investing. At 8.58x, we're getting three of the best teams in hockey at prices that are simply too good to pass up. The Avalanche price is particularly perplexing, considering they're facing one of the NHL's worst teams while playing their best hockey of the season. We're backing three juggernauts at tremendous value. Let's ride and watch those units come home.
