The Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals meet at Capital One Arena in a Metropolitan matchup to open Friday’s action on the ice.

All eyes will be on Hurricanes center Evgeny Kuznetsov, who was acquired by Carolina from Washington ahead of the NHL trade deadline. Kuznetsov paced the Caps in points during their 2018 Stanley Cup run and suited up for 810 career games with Washington.

The Hurricanes storm into Capital One as a huge road favorite in the NHL odds amid a five-game winning streak, while the Capitals will look to rebound from Wednesday’s 7-3 loss to Toronto.

Here are our free NHL picks and NHL player props for Hurricanes vs. Capitals on March 22.

Hurricanes vs Capitals odds

Hurricanes vs Capitals predictions

The Carolina Hurricanes have won 10 of their past 12 contests, and a quick peek at the standings shows the Washington Capitals aren’t in the same class as the visiting side.

Even with this being a back-to-back spot with travel for Carolina, the Hurricanes are still a huge favorite. In particular, this is a mismatch featuring an elite Carolina defense facing a floundering Washington offense.

Washington has scored the fifth-fewest goals per game, while Carolina has allowed the fourth-fewest. The Hurricanes will turn to Pyotr Kochetkov on Friday, and he’s allowed two goals or fewer in six of his past eight starts, posting a tidy .934 SV% and 2.03 GAA.

The Capitals and projected starter Charlie Lindgren also just allowed seven goals to the Maple Leafs on Wednesday. Lindgren had been rolling along a 6-2 run with a .940 SV% and 1.76 GAA, but those numbers don’t align with the 30-year-old journeyman’s performance at past stops.

With Carolina boasting a huge edge in talent and depth, Washington is in trouble tonight. To make matters worse for the Caps, I don’t anticipate top-six winger Tom Wilson to suit up following Friday’s hearing with the league's Department of Player Safety.

Carolina paces the league in Corsi For percentage (58.9%) at five-on-five, while Washington ranks 28th with a 46.0 mark. I anticipate the Hurricanes pushing the pace, capitalizing on their edge in skill, and limiting the scoring chances for the Caps.

My best bet: Hurricanes -1.5 (+132 at Pinnacle)

Hurricanes vs Capitals same-game parlay

Hurricanes -1.5

Sebastian Aho Over 0.5 assists

I’m targeting Sebastian Aho’s assist prop in addition to my best bet because he skates in a top offensive role and paces the Hurricanes in assists per 60 minutes this season with a 2.24 mark. Additionally, wingers Jake Guentzel and Seth Jarvis are capable scorers, and the trio has dominated possession and scoring chances with a 60.6 CF% and 63.5 expected goals percentage at 5-on-5. Aho’s 20 power-play assists also pace the club.

There’s also a decent edge in the available odds for the same-game parlay. DraftKings has it priced at +282, so we’re landing a positive expected value of 5% by landing the +300 odds through bet365.

Hurricanes vs Capitals moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The moneyline hasn’t seen a significant adjustment since opening. Sports Interaction has moved the number from Carolina -190 to -200, while bet365 went as far as listing Carolina at -205 before returning to -200 early this morning. For reference, the difference in implied probability between -190 and -200 is just 1.2%.

The total for this contest is far more interesting because there isn’t a consensus number. Pinnacle opened at 6.0 and has since moved to 5.5, while bet365 and Sports Interaction did the opposite. The Under is carrying the higher vig for the 6.0 totals available, and the Over is saddled with the higher tax on 5.5.
