The Florida Panthers were sitting pretty as the +650 favorites in the Stanley Cup odds to make it three straight championships, but their luck took a turn for the worse on Thursday morning.

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov was involved in a spill in the team's opening training camp session, and he suffered a knee injury that will require surgery. Barkov could miss the entire season, playoffs included.

Barkov injury painful for Panthers

It's not official as of Friday afternoon, but the smart money is saying that Aleksander Barkov is done for the season following a freak knee injury suffered during a Thursday practice session.

The Florida Panthers went from +650 and a clear-cut Stanley Cup odds favorite to a +1100 sixth-choice, tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Edmonton Oilers, the two-time runners-up to the Panthers in the Final, are now +800 favorites, down from +850.

Hot on the Oilers' heels in the NHL odds are the Dallas Stars at +850, down from +900. Also falling half a point and into third place are the current favorites from the East, the Carolina Hurricanes, at +900.

Rounding out the Top 5 are the Colorado Avalanche and the Vegas Golden Knights, tied at +950.
