The AFC South used to be the laughingstock of the NFL. Times are changing.
Houston and Jacksonville both went to the playoffs last year and are expected to be in the mix atop the AFC again in 2026.
Just where they finish in this divisional race comes down to how the Texans and Jaguars handle their individual schedule quirks, and how much Indianapolis and Tennessee push back.
I measure the predictions markets for the AFC South and give my best picks for the 2026 NFL season.

AFC South breakdown
Houston Texans: Cold road home
Oddsmakers have set the Houston Texans as favorites in a dozen games in 2026, as this elite stop unit makes them the class of the AFC South. But closer inspection of those odds hints at what could be a hard-fought campaign for Houston, especially if regression rolls into town. Twelve of 17 games have spreads of a field goal or less (-3 to +3), lining up another nail-biting season after the Texans went 7-5 in one-score clashes last year.
Quarterback C.J. Stroud is surrounded by nice adds at the skill positions but that could all be wasted if this new-look offensive line can’t shake Houston’s protection problems. The Texans closed out last season on a nine-game run, thanks in part to a home/indoor friendly final stretch. Stroud’s struggles outside and in the cold will be tested in 2026, with chilly weather outdoor stops in four of Houston’s final six games.
Indianapolis Colts: Wonder about the Unders
Like “$5 Footlongs”, the Indianapolis Colts’ 7-1 start to 2025 is a distant memory. That “too good to be true” scenario quickly dried up (1-8), with injuries adding to a stiffer second-half schedule. The Colts defense has more answers than the offense entering 2026, boasting a sound secondary that will cut down on opponents’ explosive plays. Lou Anarumo’s blitz-heavy schemes need to cook up more chaos at the line of scrimmage to force foes to throw into the teeth of that stop unit.
And then we come to Daniel Jones and the Indy offense. Jones was an MVP sleeper during that hot start but padded his stats against some terrible teams. He doesn’t have that luxury in 2026, opening against AFC heavyweights Baltimore, Kansas City, and rival Houston. Jonathan Taylor can only run the ball so much. I’ve circled the Colts as an early Under play, especially with 11 look-ahead totals north of the key number of 47 points.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Road rash
Much like the rival Texans, the Jacksonville Jaguars are favorites more often than not, but 11 of their 17 look-ahead lines are FG spreads (-3 to +3). That means fortunes could easily sway. I’m taking the Jags’ furious finish to 2025 (8-0 run) with cautious optimism, as many of those foes straight up sucked. That said, Jacksonville puts together one of the better two-way teams in the NFL and the ceiling is high in Year 2 under coach Liam Coen.
Perhaps the biggest thing working against Jacksonville is the schedule. Thanks to the team’s UK commitments, the Jaguars play just three times in Duval County in the opening 11 weeks and wrap that stretch with three straight roadies (bye in Week 7). That’s stinks for a club that thrived at home with a 7-1 SU and ATS record last year. Jacksonville also got a boost from 31 takeaways in 2025 – a high variance impact that’s tough to replicate year to year.
Tennessee Titans: Sideline switch
The Tennessee Titans are projected to finish among the worst in the NFL in 2026 and are giving points in only two games (vs. N.Y. Jets and Cleveland). Growing pains are incoming with so many new faces on and off the field. Second-year QB Cam Ward benefits from Brian Daboll as his new OC, offering fluid RPO and play action sets, with a deeper receiving corps. Considering the game scripts from those look-ahead spreads, Tennessee will be passing more as it plays from behind most Sundays.
The Titans defense also gets a remodel under head coach Robert Saleh, who did bring in a bunch of guys familiar with his setup. His system relies on pressure from the front four without much blitzing and protects against anything deep. That “bend but don’t break” approach should at least make opposing offenses work for their points after explosive plays and soft red-zone defense had Tennessee barfing up 28 points per game last season.
My favorite AFC South player props this season
C.J. Stroud – No 4,000+ Passing Yards
Injuries in the receiving corps and a really rough final stretch could keep Stroud from amassing 4,000+ passing yards in 2026. His indoor/outdoor splits are troublesome, considering he’s outside in the cold a lot this winter.
Jonathan Taylor – Yes 12+ Rushing TDs
Taylor’s touchdown forecasts sit between 11 and 15 rushing scores in 2026. The Colts were money in the red zone last season, with Taylor finding paydirt 18 times on the ground. If Daniel Jones stumbles, it’s all on J.T.
Trevor Lawrence – Yes Score 2+ rushing TDs in a game
Lawrence was let off the leash under Liam Coen and we saw his rushing numbers spike in 2025. That included nine rushing TDs. He posted three two rushing TD games and will continue to make plays with his legs.
Cam Ward – Yes 3,500+ Passing Yards
Ward had a respectable rookie season despite his surroundings, wrapping up 2025 with just over 3,100 passing yards. His improvements in the back half and the addition of new OC Brian Daboll, along with some talented targets, has Ward projected for as many as 3,700 yards.
AFC South trends to know for 2026
- Texans: The Texans at least keep the scores low when pegged as road chalk. Houston is 5-10 Over/Under as an away favorite the past three seasons, including a 1-5 O/U count when laying points in enemy territory last year. The Texans are faves in five of their eight roadies in 2026.
- Colts: The Colts have been excellent at building up bankrolls in the early workings of the schedule the past few seasons. Since 2023, Indianapolis is 7-5 SU and 8-4 ATS between Week 1 and Week 4. Indy is getting points in each of its opening three games in 2026 before laying -1.5 vs. Washington in the UK in Week 4.
- Jaguars: Jacksonville was 5-3 ATS on the road in Liam Coen’s first year as coach, continuing the Jaguars’ past success of coming through as a visitor. They’re 14-9 ATS (61%) on the road since 2023.
- Titans: Considering the coaching changes in Nashville, including two last season, it’s tough to bite down on any trends from the Titans. Tennessee was one of the better Over plays due to its dreadful defense, going 11-6 O/U in 2025. Coach Saleh’s defense could stop that bleeding and put an end to the Overs.
