Jacksonville State vs Middle Tennessee best bet: Jacksonville State -5.5 (-115)
There might be some pause around this wager, particularly since Middle Tennessee, which has lost three straight Conference USA games (and four in a row overall), has lost by a total of 13 points.
The Blue Raiders lost to Delaware 31-28, a week after dropping a 22-20 decision against Missouri State. They kicked off their league slate with a 24-16 loss to Kennesaw State.
However, the Blue Raiders are about to face one of college football’s most dominant rushing attacks. In fact, if you take away the teams that run the triple option, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks are the most prolific rushing game in the nation, churning out 276 yards per game.
Middle Tennessee currently ranks Top 3 in the conference against the run, but there’s no team in C-USA this committed to pounding the rock.
The Gamecocks lead the conference in scoring at 30.7 points per game, and their running game gets them a healthy 5.6 yards per carry, while their 21 rushing scores are six clear of the field.
Jacksonville State has won big in head-to-head matchups in each of the last two years, dropping 40+ in each and cruising to double-digit wins in both.
Last year’s 42-20 win saw the Gamecocks ring up a massive 438 yards on the ground. Expect much the same in wet conditions, en route to another JVST romp.

Cam Cook has been running over the competition this season, just 51 yards short of 1,000 as he plays in game eight.
He’s coming off a “light” rushing game, going for 117 yards and three scores against Delaware.
With freshman QB Caden Creel nursing an elbow injury, Cook should see his workload increase, as well as his yardage. He’s run for 120+ yards in four games this season.
There’s not a ton of passing in the JVST arsenal, but senior receiver Brock Rechsteiner sees the majority of the action. He’s topped the 37.5-yard line in three of his last four, and should be around that number again.
We’ll wrap with Creel, who has three rushing scores in his last four games. With Cook getting almost no juice to find the endzone, we’ll ride with the freshman QB at decent -150 odds.
