The 49ers are laying 7.5 points against the Commanders on Monday Night Football, but mounting injuries and a soaring 52.5-point total have created value on the Under, as our NFL expert explains.

The 49ers are rolling while the Commanders are reeling, so Monday Night Football fans are being asked to lay more than a touchdown at Levi's Stadium tonight.

With injuries mounting for both teams, my Commanders vs. 49ers predictions explain why this inflated total — and the Under — has my attention.

Read all my NFL picks for Monday, Oct. 19, with kickoff set for 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN and ABC.

Commanders vs 49ers prediction: Under 52.5

This total was 49.5 on the lookahead and has crept as high as 52.5 as of Saturday, which is too much for me. I'm backing the Under, with THE BLITZ projecting 49.4 points on Monday night.

There are just too many health concerns surrounding key offensive players to get excited about an Over this high, especially given that this is the highest total either team has seen all year. Mike Evans was a DNP with multiple injuries on Friday, and Deebo Samuel is out. Add in the injuries to Demarcus Robinson, De'Zhaun Stribling, Ricky Pearsall, and Christian Kirk, and the 49ers might be rolling with WR8 and WR9 on their depth chart.

Washington could also have trouble moving the ball, and I doubt San Francisco is going to let Jayden Daniels run for another 100+ yards. Running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt has not practiced this week, while his backups, Austin Ekeler and Rachaad White, have both been limited. Stefon Diggs logged his first limited practice since Week 4, and Terry McLaurin is getting veteran rest after failing to handle his full workload in Week 5.

Throw in double-digit winds and cross-country travel for the visitors, and there are too many red flags for me to back points on Monday night. I'd play this Under down to 50.5.

Commanders vs 49ers combo

I'm running the double quarterback touchdown combo every Monday night, and this might be the most optimistic I've been all season, as both Brock Purdy and Jayden Daniels are carrying legitimate scoring probabilities.

Purdy has rushed for 29+ yards in all but one game this season (4-1 O/U on his rushing total) and scored once, while Daniels showed last week that he's not afraid to run following his elbow injury, totaling two rushing TDs and 103 yards on the ground. Both TDs are +EV, per the projections at their current prices.

Four quarterbacks have scored on Monday night through five games, and this TD system already cashed at 14x in Week 3.

Commanders vs 49ers combo

  • Jayden Daniels anytime TD
  • Brock Purdy anytime TD

 TOP PICK
Commanders vs 49ers player prop: Brock Purdy 20+ rushing yards - Yes

Brock Purdy is 4-1 O/U on his rushing total this season and closed with a line of 25.5 yards last week. He's rushed for 29+ yards in all four Overs and projects for 29.4 yards on the ground Monday night, making 20+ yards at 44% the best +EV prop in this game. I'd buy it up to 54%.

The Commanders are allowing 19.4 rushing yards per game to opposing QBs, the seventh-highest mark in the league. Jameis Winston (27 yards on a 2.5-yard total), Dak Prescott (26 yards on a 12.5-yard total), and Jalen Hurts (46 yards on a 30.5-yard total) all set season-high rushing marks against this defense, beating their closing rushing totals by an average of 17 yards. Purdy currently ranks sixth at his position in scramble yards and fifth in designed runs.

Covers COVERS INTEL: In four of five games, Brock Purdy has topped his rushing total; he's done it with ease, clearing the closing total by 41.5%, 106.5%, 94.3%, and 65.7%.

Commanders vs 49ers touchdown scorer: Jacob Cowing

I got this at 5.25x against a fair price of 4.8x if Deebo Samuel sits, and that looks likely.

Deebo exited in the third quarter last week and looks set to miss multiple weeks. With Demarcus Robinson already out and Mike Evans struggling to stay healthy after not practicing Thursday due to multiple ailments, Jacob Cowing is a great down-the-order look on an elite offense vs. the Commanders, who rank in the bottom six in EPA/dropback on defense.

Cowing saw 92% of the snaps in 3-WR sets and could see more looks in 2-WR sets following the Deebo injury. He played more snaps last week than both Brandin Cooks and Jordan Watkins.
