While Brent Venables made his reputation with ruthless defenses, it may be an impressive offense that steadies his tenure as the Oklahoma Sooners head coach.

Nonetheless, a valiant defensive effort will be necessary to slow the Auburn Tigers, led by their own NFL-caliber offensive line and experienced quarterback.

My Auburn vs. Oklahoma predictions and college football picks trust both offensive lines and both quarterbacks more than either defense on Saturday, September 20. Expect a relatively high-scoring afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Norman, OK when kickoff comes your way at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

College football odds have Oklahoma at -6.5, with the Over/Under at 46.5.

Auburn vs Oklahoma prediction

Auburn vs Oklahoma best bet: Over 46.5 (-110)

We got spoiled. We, as college football fans, forgot how chaotic quarterback play can be, particularly behind offensive lines still trying to find chemistry.

The universal pandemic eligibility waiver created an era of greater experience than ever before in college football, and enjoying veteran quarterbacks behind established offensive lines became borderline typical.

It is not any longer.

Unless, perhaps, you are Auburn and Oklahoma. The right side of the Tigers’ offensive line, in particular, may as well already be ready for the NFL. And the Sooners have regained the push that helped define much of their last 25 years.

Courtesy of the transfer portal, both Auburn and Oklahoma employ veteran quarterbacks, the Tigers in fact trotting out the Sooners’ former quarterback in Jackson Arnold.

Both Arnold and his counterpart, John Mateer, are more than capable of adding an extra hat to the rushing attack, furthering these offenses’ dynamic options.

Simply put, no matchup with offensive lines like these and quarterbacks like these should feature a total below 49.

Stop taking quality line play and impressive quarterback performances as the standard. They are not. And offenses that can reliably trust them should be trusted to score points, particularly if they need to keep up with each other.

Auburn vs Oklahoma same-game parlay

Auburn may have the best rush defense in the country. At least, to this point, it has statistically showed that kind of strength, so expect Mateer to finish drives through the air.

On the other side of the ball, the Tigers are better running the ball than throwing it, and that has often meant Arnold does everything for the offense.

Auburn vs Oklahoma 3-leg SGP

  • Over 46.5
  • John Mateer Over 1.5 passing TDs
  • Jackson Arnold anytime TD

Our deep-ball SGP: Sooners come out on top

Arnold may simply need to do too much for Auburn these days.

At some point, Venables will find a way to stop the former Oklahoma quarterback, and then the Tigers will have no further recourse.

Meanwhile, the Sooners at least have a few notable receivers, and the threat of Deion Burks downfield should yield one tally.

Auburn vs Oklahoma 5-leg SGP

  • Over 46.5
  • John Mateer Over 1.5 passing TDs
  • Jackson Arnold anytime TD
  • Deion Burks anytime TD
  • Oklahoma moneyline

Auburn vs Oklahoma game predictions

Auburn vs Oklahoma moneyline prediction

Homefield still counts for something, as does the better defense. Furthermore, Oklahoma already out-physicalled Michigan this season, while Auburn’s best claim is a chaotic win against Baylor.

One of those imbues more personal assurance than the other.

Auburn vs Oklahoma spread prediction

One of these teams is 2-0 against the spread against FBS foes this season, and the other is 1-2.

Some deference should be given to Auburn for that dismal record, it still won each game by multiple possessions, but falling 9.5 points short of the 25.5-point spread against South Alabama is not exactly a close call, particularly since a field goal helped that cause with only 75 seconds remaining.

Auburn vs Oklahoma Over/Under prediction

This total was beaten down too much through the week after opening at 52.5 on Sunday. All of 52, 51 and 49 are key numbers. To move through all three is unnecessarily aggressive.

Auburn vs Oklahoma odds

  • Spread: Auburn +6.5 | Oklahoma -6.5
  • Moneyline: Auburn +198 | Oklahoma -245
  • Over/Under: Over 46.5 | Under 46.5

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
