Arizona State vs Oklahoma State Odds, Picks and Predictions: Defense Takes a Back Seat

Both Arizona State and Oklahoma State lit up the scoreboard in Week 1, scoring 40 and 58 points, respectively, in big wins. With both offenses looking great — and question marks lingering on each defense — we expect more scoring in Week 2.

Arizona State travels to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State on Saturday. Both teams won last week and will try and get to 2-0.

The Sun Devils thumped Northern Arizona 40-3 while the Cowboys handled Central Michigan 58-44. Look for two Over bets to come through in this game.

OSU is ranked No. 11 in the AP Top 25 and Arizona State will have to contend with a potent offense. This game could come down to who scores last.

Arizona State vs Oklahoma State picks and predictions

This has all the markings of a track meet.

The first-half Over opened at 28.5 and has held steady at that number at most sportsbooks, though FanDuel knocked it up a point to 29.5.

It shouldn’t matter. OSU has the offense to reach this number by itself. In last week’s drubbing of Central Michigan, the Cowboys had 44 of its 58 points by halftime.

They are obviously playing a tougher opponent in the Sun Devils, but ASU has some questions on defense. The Sun Devils only returned four starters on defense and holding Northern Arizona to 120 total yards of offense is not a good benchmark of how they will fare against OSU.

ASU is also adjusting to a new defensive coordinator in Donnie Henderson. He, and the defense, will get his first real test on Saturday on the road.

It is an exam I don’t think they will pass. OSU quarterback Spencer Sanders was on fire last Thursday against Central Michigan. He passed for a career-high 406 yards and tied his career-best with four touchdown tosses. He also set a career mark with two rushing scores.

"Knock on wood, he's really good," OSU Head Coach Mike Gundy said. "He understands our concepts. He understands second nature where to go with the ball. And it's a big advantage for us."

The performance was impressive even against Central Michigan. ASU should provide more resistance defensively, but if Sanders has half his output in the first half that he did last week, the Over of 28.5 should hit.

ASU knows how to score as well. The Sun Devils had 24 first-half points and two transfer portal players should contribute once again. Ex-Florida Gator quarterback Emory Jones didn’t have a passing touchdown against Northern Arizona, but he did run for two scores last Thursday.

Former Wyoming RB Xazavian Valladay had two other touchdowns.

ASU will try and establish the run but will have to try and keep up with the Cowboys, who will force the pace of this game. Expect the two teams to get to 30 points before halftime.

My best bet: First Half Over 28.5 (-125 at DraftKings)

Spread analysis

The line for this game opened at 11 and went up a half-point at some sportsbooks but a few kept it at 11.

I have no doubt the Cowboys can get out in front of the Sun Devils by 11 points. My concern is can they keep that margin until the end of the game? Last week they were 20.5-point favorites against Central Michigan and were leading 51-22 going into the fourth quarter.

But in the final 15 minutes, OSU decided to be charitable and let Central Michigan back in the game. They were outscored 22-7 in the fourth quarter and OSU backers watched helplessly as their bet slips went up in flames.

If the Cowboys build a lead of 11 or more points, the Sun Devils are more than capable of closing the gap.

The trends, however, do not favor ASU. They are 1-4 in its last five against the spread despite covering at home last week.

Conversely, the Cowboys are 10-2-1 ATS in their last 13 games and 8-1-1 in their last 10 ATS following a straight-up win.

I believe, however, this will be a repeat of last week’s OSU game. The Cowboys will jump out to a big lead early and then let ASU back into the game. Look for a touchdown difference between the two.

Over/Under analysis

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the total in this game reached the Over by halftime. Both ASU and OSU have the ability to put up points, as evidenced by the 40 scored by the Sun Devils and the 58 produced by the Cowboys in Week 1.

The total opened at 52.5 but bettors hammered it up to as high as 58 in some sportsbooks. WynnBET has it lowest at 56.5. It shouldn’t matter, however, as both teams are more than capable of putting points on the board.

This could be a back-and-forth game, scoring-wise. Both defenses have issues. OSU allowed 44 points to a Central Michigan team it was beating handily in the first half.

The Sun Devils are 5-2 on the Over in their last seven road games. The Over is also 4-1 for ASU in their last six games against teams in the Big 12.

For the Cowboys, the Over is 4-1 in their last five home games. Also, the Over is 21-10-1 when OSU is a double-digit favorite.

I don’t see 90 combined points scored in this game, like the total produced by both teams last week. I do, however, see this game reaching the 70-point mark. This should be a no-sweat bet for those who make it.
