Against the Spread (ATS) Pick
There were some negative reports coming out of Tempe before this season started, and the Sun Devils haven’t been able to squash them with their performance. Despite having all the talent in the world, this Arizona State team is just 60th in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency (all efficiency stats from KenPom.com) and 95th in adjusted defensive efficiency. Meanwhile, Sean Miller is doing more with his Arizona group than the previous ones, which often featured multiple five-star recruits. This Wildcats team looks a lot like the Xavier teams Miller coached before inheriting a talent-rich Arizona program.
Regardless of how these teams have played to start the year, this is a rivalry game and the Sun Devils are likely going to get up for this one. Arizona State has won and covered in three of the last four meetings between these teams, and the team will look to get back on track with an emotional win here.
The Sun Devils have a good opportunity tonight, especially if you factor in that the Wildcats are just 58th in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency. Things haven’t clicked for this Arizona State team just yet, but Remy Martin, Josh Christopher, Alonzo Verge Jr. and Marcus Bagley are all gifted scorers, with Cristopher and Bagley likely to be selected in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft. All four of these guys should enjoy playing against a mediocre Wildcats defense, and one would think they’ll lock in a little defensively in a game that should mean more to them than any that they’ve played this season.
Under head coach Bobby Hurley, the Sun Devils are 15-6 ATS when playing at home and coming off a loss against a conference rival. All in all, Arizona State looks like the right side in this one. And it shouldn’t surprise you if the team wins outright.
