A year after hype led to only disappointment, the Phoenix Suns and their downsized roster are putting together a sneaky great season.

It may not be as flashy as the NBA Cup championship and the No. 2 seed in the East, perks enjoyed by the New York Knicks, but my Knicks vs. Suns predictions will put all my faith in Phoenix, nonetheless.

Find out more in my NBA picks for Friday, January 9.

Knicks vs Suns prediction

Knicks vs Suns best bet: Suns moneyline (-105)

The Phoenix Suns are having one of the best against-the-spread seasons ever. At 25-10-2 ATS (over 70%), they’re outpacing last year’s Thunder, who posted a 54-26-2 record (65.9%) since U.S. sports betting regulation began in 2018.

This is all the more absurd because a year ago, Phoenix put together one of the worst ATS seasons since 2018. The Suns finished 31-50-1, a 38.4% win rate, only 3.5 games better than the 76ers’ 28-54.

Expectations were too high for a roster featuring Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. Shedding them and now leaning on Dillon Brooks and Collin Gillespie obviously lowered expectations, but they were lowered too far.

Trust Phoenix ATS for the foreseeable future, and in this case, trust the Suns on the moneyline in what is effectively a pick’em against the New York Knicks

Knicks vs Suns same-game parlay

Backing Brooks has been a profitable approach this season, the aggravating wing finding success under the radar.

However, this points prop has been pushed a bit too far. Against the Knicks’ perimeter defenders, the Suns should focus on their most trusted scorer, not Brooks.

Knicks vs Suns SGP

  • Suns moneyline
  • Devin Booker Over 26.5 points
  • Dillon Brooks Under 20.5 points

Our "from downtown" SGP: From Down-Towns

Karl-Anthony Towns is in a mild slump, hitting just one of 11 threes in his last three games, but any time the Towns’ 3-pointer prop is reasonably juiced at Over 1.5, it is a smart bet.

Before this slump, Towns had hit multiple triples in 16 of 31 contests despite shooting just 36.6% from deep this year. A surge is inevitable.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
