Clash at the Coliseum field
Depending on where you shop, either Kyle Larson or Martin Truex Jr is listed as the favorite for this exhibition event, run on the short track at L.A. Coliseum, after being held at Daytona for years.
Larson's performed much better since the move, logging Top-5 finishes each year in the Coliseum era thus far. Meanwhile, Truex won last year's clash, and will look to prove he still has some magic left, turning 44 this season.
As of Tuesday morning, William Byron and Kyle Busch round out the top tier of drivers, priced at or below +1,000 at major outlets. Former two-time winners Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin both lurk slightly behind in the +1,100 to +1,200 range, while the field, in general, is distributed fairly competitively, with the top half all within +3,000 — a rarity on the NASCAR circuit.
Clash at the Coliseum expert picks and predictions

Clash at the Coliseum pre-qualifying favorites
Kyle Larson (+850)
The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion led the season’s most laps in two of the last three years. Larson also thrived on short tracks. On top of that, he was fifth in both of his Busch Light Clash starts in the L.A. Coliseum.
William Byron (+850)
Byron won the most races (six) and led the second-most laps (1,017) in 2023. This year, he returns to the L.A. Coliseum with finishes of sixth and 10th respectively on the short track.
Kyle Busch (+900)
Busch was runner-up in 2022 while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing. He did so after being fastest in qualifying and winning a Heat Race as well. This very ride he’s now driving qualified second in that same race with Tyler Reddick. Like Busch, Reddick also won a Heat Race, and if not for some bad luck in the main event, was going to be a contender to win it in the end. Last year, Busch finished third in the No. 8 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. He’s due.
Clash at the Coliseum sleepers
Tyler Reddick (+2,000)
After qualifying second via winning a heat race in 2022, Reddick finished sixth a year ago. He’ll have speed. Can he deliver?
Ryan Preece (+2,200)
Preece had fast race cars on flat tracks last season, most notably Martinsville, which is the closest comparison to this track. Preece also finished seventh in this event in 2023, and back with the same team in 2024.
Austin Dillon (+3,000)
RCR had great cars here with the No. 8 Chevrolet qualifying second in 2022 and finishing third in 2023. Austin Dillon has had his fair share of success too. He was third in 2023 and runner-up last season. He’s trending towards a win Sunday.
He was +7,500 last year...
Justin Haley (+10,000)
Why not here? Haley won a heat race, started third, and if not for contact with Kyle Larson late, he was destined for a Top-5 in the 2022 edition. Last year, he finished ninth. While he’s with a new team (Rick Ware Racing), a lack of speed isn’t something that’s going to be an issue for them on a track of this size.
Clash at the Coliseum fades
Ryan Blaney (+1,000)
No one was hotter at the end of the 2023 season than champion Ryan Blaney. Among his streak to end last year was a win at Martinsville. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have great stats here (17th in both races) — to boot, Joey Logano came here last year as the series’ defending champion and finished 16th. Speaking of whom…
Joey Logano (+1,100)
He won the inaugural race in 2022 but was a dismal 16th a year ago. Part of that is due to an incident, like most others, that relegated him to a sub-15th-place result. My concern, however, is the fact that he also started only 16th.
Chase Elliott (+1,500)
The most popular driver struggled on these types of tracks the last couple of years. He only placed 11th after starting 15th in 2022 and came home 21st after coming from 22nd a year ago.

L.A. Coliseum track analysis
The third iteration of the Busch Light Clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is upon us. NASCAR is back! This year’s preseason race should run a lot like the previous two versions with nothing being changed to the car or the layout of the .25-mile track raced in a football stadium between last year and this.
I don’t expect much difference in terms of how things will look in 2024 as it did in 2022 or 2023 in regards to the track analysis. This race, and this track, kind of is what it is.
Some places you’ll see an aged surface get a year older, or a change to the tire compound or even a change to how the cars are setup on that specific venue — but for the Clash, it’s status quo.
Clash at the Coliseum trends
- Starting spot matters for the race win. Joey Logano won from the fourth place starting position in 2022 and Martin Truex Jr from the front row (second) last year.
- Oddly enough, just eight of the Top 12 finishers in the A-Main started 10th on back in 2022 and seven of the Top-8 finishers a year ago coming from fifth on back. This trend is great when factoring in a pre-race bet for a Top-5 finish. Snag a driver with some success that isn’t necessarily starting up front either.
