The Toronto Blue Jays open a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers tonight after an 8-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles, with Jose Soriano facing Troy Melton at Rogers Centre, and I'm breaking it down with my Blue Jays vs. Tigers predictions. Toronto is a -135 favorite, with first pitch set for 7:07 p.m. ET.
My card starts with Brett Bateman before leaning into another productive offensive night for Toronto. It's all part of my MLB picks for this Monday, Sept. 14 matchup.
Tigers vs Blue Jays predictions
Tigers vs Blue Jays best bet: Brett Bateman Over 1.5 total bases (+135)
Brett Bateman has been quickly establishing himself as one of the Toronto Blue Jays' most reliable contact batters, and he draws an appealing matchup against Detroit Tigers' right-hander Troy Melton. The rookie is batting .336 with an .844 OPS across 122 at-bats. His recent form has been even stronger, with Bateman hitting .370 with a .519 slugging percentage over his last seven games, and registering homers in consecutive contests against Baltimore.
Melton owns an impressive 2.42 ERA overall, but left-handed hitters have been doing the damage. They're slugging .430 against him with 11 home runs, compared with a .287 slugging percentage and only two homers allowed to righties.
His form has been slipping considerably, too. Melton has allowed nine earned runs, 13 hits, and three long balls across 11 September innings, with a .920 opponent's OPS this month.
At +135, I like getting plus money on Bateman to collect two total bases rather than paying heavy juice for one hit. I’d play this down to +115.

Tigers vs Blue Jays same-game parlay (SGP)
I’m leaning into another quality night from Toronto’s offense for Monday’s parlay. The Blue Jays' moneyline anchors the ticket after Toronto erupted for eight runs and three dingers on Sunday. Jose Soriano has been steady since the deadline deal, holding opponents to three runs or fewer in six of his seven starts as a Blue Jay.
Melton’s recent struggles give the Jays a realistic path to doing much of the work themselves for the Over to hit on 7.5. Meanwhile, Detroit arrives on a four-game winning streak and can contribute enough.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. completes the parlay with Over 1.5 total bases. Vlad comes off his best game in weeks, going 4-for-5 with a homer and a double on Sunday. His contact profile gives him multiple paths to two bases against a pitcher allowing an .896 OPS over the last 28 days.

Tigers vs Blue Jays home run pick: Josh Smith (+950)
Josh Smith is the long shot I want against Melton. Smith’s full-season numbers hide how well he's hit since joining Toronto. He's tallied five home runs in 45 at-bats as a Blue Jay, producing a .600 slugging percentage and a .970 OPS after clubbing only one homer with the Texas Rangers earlier this season.
The matchup makes the +950 price even more interesting. Smith bats left-handed, and Melton has surrendered 11 home runs to lefties compared with only two to righties. Left-handed hitters also own a .730 OPS against him, more than 200 points higher than right-handed batters.
Smith has already shown his power plays in this Toronto lineup after homering against the Athletics last week. At +950, the combination of his recent power surge and Melton’s platoon split is enough for a quarter-unit shot, and I’d play this to +800.
