The post-Rafael Devers era for the Boston Red Sox started on a good note, shutting out the Seattle Mariners in the opener of their three-game set.
However, my Red Sox vs. Mariners predictions suggest the Seattle bats won’t stay silent much longer, with Boston handing the ball to a struggling Walker Buehler for Game 2.
Check out my MLB picks for this American League matchup, with first pitch set to be thrown at T-Mobile Park in Seattle at 9:40 pm ET on Tuesday, June 17.
Red Sox vs Mariners prediction
My Red Sox vs Mariners best bet: Jorge Polanco Over 0.5 RBI (+180 at BetMGM)
The Boston Red Sox got a great start out of Lucas Giolito last night, with the veteran right-hander throwing six scoreless innings while holding a hard-hitting Seattle Mariners team to just three hits and striking out 10.
That’s good stuff against a Mariners lineup that ranks 14th in OPS and seventh in wRC+ when facing right-handed pitching this season. Walker Buehler must be like: “I have to follow that?”
In a season full of highs and lows for the BoSox, it’s mostly been lows for the veteran right-hander during his first year with his new team. He enters this game ranked in the 28th percentile in expected ERA and the 25th in expected batting average. His last three starts have been particularly rough, having surrendered 15 runs (13 earned) on 23 hits, including five home runs.
And while the Mariners were blanked last night, Jorge Polanco remained consistent, getting another knock. Polanco is hitting .303 over his last eight games and ranks in the 92nd percentile in expected batting average. So, he’s been getting the bat on the ball a lot.
The 31-year-old slugger is expected to hit in the clean-up spot tonight. JP Crawford and Julio Rodriguez have done a good job of getting on base, and when you’re hitting behind Cal Raleigh, you’re going to get some pitches to hit.
Polanco is second on the team in RBI with 35. At this price, in this matchup, I’ll happily back him to drive in another tonight.
Red Sox vs Mariners same-game parlay (SGP)
There’s a pretty good chance that if Jorge Polanco drives in a run, it’ll be JP Crawford. Seattle's leadoff man is on a heater right now and getting on base a lot. He’s hitting .424 with a .534 OBP over his last 16 games. I like Crawford to cross home plate tonight.
Then let’s round this SGP out with Bryan Woo to go Over 5.5 strikeouts. The 26-year-old right-hander is just about league average when it comes to punchouts, striking out 22.1% of batters faced.
However, the Red Sox often go down swinging. We saw that yesterday, with Logan Gilbert racking up 10 Ks in just five innings. Boston has the third-highest strikeout rate vs right-handed pitching this season. Woo should be able to eclipse this number like he did when he had eight strikeouts when he last faced them back on April 24.
