Padres vs Giants betting preview

Starting pitchers

Joe Musgrove (2-3, 2.83 ERA): Since throwing a no-hitter on April 9, Musgrove has allowed nine earned runs in 19 innings of work. Musgrove has serious bat-missing ability, as evidenced by his 47 strikeouts in 34 innings this season. He did, however, allow five earned runs in a loss to the Giants last weekend.

Kevin Gausman (2-0, 2.04 ERA): Gausman has always had decent stuff, but he has really taken his game to another level since arriving in San Francisco. He had a 3.62 ERA with the team last season, and he’s off to a hot start in 2021. The righty also threw six innings of one-run ball against the Padres in a San Francisco win on Sunday.

Betting trend to know

Moneyline pick

The Giants beat the Padres 7-1 with these same two starters on the mound on Sunday, so the oddsmakers easily could have made San Francisco the favorite in this game. However, that isn’t even close to the case, and that’s despite the fact that the Giants won the opening game of this series last night.

While Gausman was excellent the last time these teams played, look for the Padres to make some adjustments and do some damage against him in this one. Fernando Tatis Jr. actually took Gausman yard last game, but there was nobody on base when he did it. This time around, the Padres should be able to put some runners on, and that would make any bombs that much more meaningful.

Overall, this could end up being a high-scoring game, but the Padres figure to be the ones that are more equipped to win that. Especially considering guys like Eric Hosmer, Jurickson Profar and Trent Grisham have already had some success against Gausman in their careers.

PREDICTION: Padres (-144)

Over/Under pick

The Giants have already shown that they are capable of hitting Musgrove around, as they scored six runs in five innings against him on Sunday. San Francisco might not put up seven in this game again, but the team should be able to do its part in taking care of this low total.

Meanwhile, the Padres will look to rebound from a tough loss on Friday, and they have the bats to give Gausman some trouble. Gausman also missed some time this week, so he might not have been able to do his usual maintenance.

PREDICTION: Over 7 (-110)
