Padres vs Brewers Picks and Predictions: Milwaukee's Best?

Christian Yelich is a good bet to bounce back from his 0-for-4 performance Tuesday, bolstering a Brewers lineup that had knocked in 18 runs in its previous three wins before Tuesday's loss.

Padres vs Brewers betting preview

Starting pitchers

Chris Paddack (2-3, 2.97 ERA): Paddack is one of the more impressive young starters in baseball, and he has been pretty good entering this one. Over the last three games, Paddack has pitched 13.0 innings and allowed only two earned runs. He isn’t working as deep into games as the team would like — and he does occasionally get himself into some difficult situations — but the Padres will happily take a short but dominant outing.

Eric Lauer (1-1, 2.81 ERA): Lauer has been used as both a starter and a reliever this season, so it’s unlikely Milwaukee has any intentions of letting the righty work deep into this game. If Lauer can give them anything close to a quality start, the Brewers would likely be ecstatic. Lauer spent his first two years in the bigs with San Diego, which could make for an interesting story when he takes the mound tonight.

Moneyline pick

The Brewers probably expected to pick up a win in Corbin Burnes’ start on Tuesday, but it ultimately wasn’t meant to be. He ended up getting shelled — at least for his standards — and Milwaukee now needs a win in this game in order to take the lead in this series back. For what it’s worth, the Brewers seemingly have a great chance at doing just that.

While Chris Paddack has mostly dominated right-handed hitters throughout his young career, righties are batting .293 with two homers and seven RBI against the 25-year-old this season. That’s good news for guys like Keston Hiura and Avisail Garcia. However, at some point, it’s fair to wonder whether or not lefties will start getting to Paddack again. Those have been a thorn in Paddack’s side since he entered MLB, and Milwaukee has one of the best in the business in Christian Yelich. Yelich was 0 for 4 against the Padres on Tuesday, and he’s too good of a hitter not to bounce back here.

Lauer could also have some tricks up his sleeve in this one. The righty used to be on this Padres team, so he likely knows how to get to some of these batters. He also won’t be expected to do too much. Milwaukee would be happy with five or so innings of three-run ball.

PREDICTION: Brewers ML +106

Over/Under pick

The Padres have gone Over the total in nine of their last 11 games, and they’re really starting to show the world just how dangerous their offense can be. San Diego is in the league’s Top 10 in runs scored this season, and the team’s .328 OBP — which is good for fourth in MLB — is a big part of that. The Padres should be able to get something going against Lauer, a former San Diego starter.

The Brewers don’t have an easy matchup in this one, as Paddack has some swing-and-miss stuff. However, Milwaukee’s offense is more than capable of getting it going here. Before scoring just one run on Tuesday, the Brewers had scored 18 in their previous three wins. They know they’ll need to do some work to give Lauer a chance, and they should be able to get it done.
