Dodgers vs Brewers betting preview

Starting pitchers

Julio Urias (12-6, 2.50 ERA): Urias has been on a hot streak of his own for the Dodgers, having won five straight starts. His team has also won 10 in a row behind him. Urias owns a microscopic 1.09 ERA during his five-start win streak.

Freddy Peralta (4-2, 4.37 ERA): Peralta is still working on getting stretched back out following a lengthy stint on the IL. He was chased after 3 2-3 innings (67 pitches) of two-run baseball against the Pirates on Aug. 3 — his first start since May 22 — before working five innings (65 pitches) against the Rays on Aug. 9 and allowing only two runs.

Dodgers vs Brewers picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The Dodgers should start a new win streak when they take on the Brewers on Monday night.

Julio Urias has quietly been one the best pitchers in baseball over his last five starts, authoring a 1.09 ERA and 0.61 WHIP. He’s struck out 31 batters compared to just two walks in that span. Urias should be able to neutralize two of the Brewers’ better hitters in Christian Yelich and Kolten Wong, who are 0-for-9 and 0-for-5, respectively, against him and are at a perceived handedness disadvantage.

Milwaukee also has to navigate the challenging Dodger bullpen, which is tops in the majors by ERA over the last two weeks (2.03). Evan Phillips, David Price, and Alex Vesia have all worked five clean innings in August. Craig Kimbrel has been afforded only two save chances in this span but has converted both of them.

The Brewers’ Freddy Peralta faces baseball’s most potent road offense (5.53 runs per game) as he continues working his way back to full strength. Peralta can be perplexing on the mound, but even he will be hard-pressed to hold off the onslaught from Mookie Betts, Will Smith, and Max Muncy.

Betts has been a dominant force atop the L.A. lineup this year, and he’s yet to be cooled off in August, authoring a 1.029 OPS while tallying a team-high 13 runs. Smith boasts a .400 average and a 1.094 OPS with 11 RBI in the same span. Muncy, after a dreadful first half of the campaign, has come alive for the Dodgers, hitting .400 this month with five homers and 12 RBI, both team-bests for the month.

Peralta will probably not pitch deep into this game, affording L.A. some extra chances at a soft Brewers bullpen that’s 20th in baseball by ERA (4.19) this month.

Trend bettors should note that the Dodgers are 42-11 in their last 53 overall, while the Brewers are 1-4 in their last five games against starters with a WHIP less than 1.15.

Prediction: Dodgers moneyline (-164 at WynnBET)

Over/Under analysis

With Milwaukee unlikely to hold up its end of the bargain on offense, bettors should back the Under.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has been keeping Urias on a looser leash of late, allowing him to work the seventh inning in three of his last five efforts. He had yet to record more than 18 outs in a start this year prior to July 16. The longer Urias works, the less exposure the L.A. relief corps will have.

Roberts should be able to stick to those in his circle of trust out of the bullpen here. The circle has gotten bigger with Chris Martin joining the club at the deadline. He’s tallied a team-high six appearances this month, allowing only two runs and four baserunners over 6 1-3 innings.

Peralta’s lone recent start against the Dodgers was impeccable, as he held them to one run on one hit and a walk over six frames last season. He’s capable of keeping this lineup on its back foot early on.

The trends say take the Under too, as the Dodgers have gone 6-2-1 to the Under in their last nine road games against teams with winning records, while the Brewers have gone 3-1-1 to the Under in their last five games against left-handed starters.

Prediction: Under 7.5 (-105 at Unibet)

Best bet

The Dodgers offense is capable of breaking out at any time, even off a shutout loss. But we won’t guarantee that happening in this spot. Instead, we’ll back the L.A. pitching staff to have its way with Milwaukee’s batting order.

Urias has been red-hot and should have plenty of success against a Brewers lineup that’s 29th in the majors in batting average against lefties (.220). There’s an embarrassment of riches behind him in the Dodgers bullpen, which shouldn’t be overworked here.

Milwaukee is 4-8 over its last 12 games, averaging a modest 3.67 runs per contest. Expect L.A. to bring that average down on Monday night.

Pick: Brewers team total Under 3.0 (-105 at FanDuel)
