Manning, the nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning, is only gaining steam in the Heisman Trophy odds race as the season approaches.

The 21-year-old moved from +900 at opening to +600, according to BetMGM insights provided on Tuesday. He also leads all candidates in ticket percentage (16%) and handle percentage (21.7%), while Ohio State wideout Jeremiah Smith Jr. (10.5%) and LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier (11.1%) were second in the respective categories.

bet365 had Manning at similar +650 odds to win college football’s highest individual honor this season. He was also featured on an enormous 37% of all Heisman bet tickets, whereas Smith (+1,000), the closest competitor, was at 10%.

FanDuel also reported that Manning was third in bets, trailing Smith Jr. and South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers, and first in handle to win the trophy.

ESPN Bet said Manning, who moved from +700 at opening to +600, has received the most total bets. Sellers was first in total handle percentage.

Joey Feazel, head of football at Caesars Sportsbook, summed up the early betting trends.

“Action has been steady on the National Championship thus far around Texas, as well as Arch Manning in the Heisman market,” Feazel said in a statement shared with Covers. “Both are heavy leaders in handle and tickets. The other QBs getting some action in the Heisman market are two who will be squaring off in Week 1, LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier and Clemson’s Cade Klubnik. Both are expected to be high draft picks and anchor both Clemson and LSU’s quest for a National Championship.”

Dark-horse challengers

Manning’s quest for the Heisman trophy won’t come without challenges. He has only attempted 95 career passes and went 3-for-6 for 19 yards against Georgia, his only matchup with a ranked opponent.

“Arch Manning, to me, is still an unknown,” said DraftKings Sportsbook director Johnny Avello. “He’s got the name. He played, but he hasn’t had the full year where he’s had total control of all downs, so we’ll see how all that works out.

“That’s one thing about bettors. They know these guys as they’re coming up, so they look at the odds, they see this guy at 18-1. They said, ‘OK, that might be some good value there.’”

Avello also mentioned an underdog who could prove to be this year’s Ashton Jeanty, another running back who doesn’t play in a Power 4 conference.

“I think (Notre Dame’s) Jeremiyah Love is a tremendous player,” he continued. “He’s 40-1. He’s a guy who’s taken some money but only 4%. We’ll see if he’s a guy during the season who gets back to where he was last year, because I think he’s one of the most talented guys in college football.”
