BAMA- You're so right about those multi purpose stadiums. I was following the game on my phone. I didn't realize that that had happen to Chipper. All I knew was I checked my phone it was 2 outs nobody on and Kimbrel pitching. I was like yeah baby Captown here I come. Then about 1.5 hours later I'm looking at scores and I saw the final. I'm like WTF that can't be WTF happened. So I looked at scoring and I'm flabbergasted. Infante? Are you fucking kidding me. Worst streak defeat ever for me.
One slight correction to your post because I grew up in San Diego. They built a baseball only stadium down there so no issues at Petco. However I have a very big issue with that cheapscape Owner who promised the city that if the approved the ballpark he would have a contender with the funds generated. All this Assclown has done is gutted the team year after year. If you own a sports for any other reason other than to produce a winner then I strongly believe you don't need to own a team. Period. It shouldn't be about the money it should be about the fans and the city.

Now I'm gonna go one one my patented rants. This brings me to the injustice unfolding in my home town of San Diego. If the NFL allows the Chargers to move to LA this will be a travesty. You have to be from Southern Cal to understand the animosity that people in San Diego have for LA. If the NFL thinks that SD fans will drive to LA to see the Chargers they have grossly miscalculated. Those fans will not root for an LA team if their life depended on it. There are 2 teams in San Diego that are hated with all their hearts. Public enemy #1 is the Dodgers #2 is the Raiders and for that matter you might as well throw the Broncos on that list as well.
San Diego has been a great football town since the AFL days and has a great tradition. To rob San Diego of this historic connection because LA couldn't get its shit together for 20+ years isn't right.
I'm hoping the Spanos family has more class than that and I'm hoping Goodell has some decency in his heart not to do San Diego like the NFL did Cleveland, Baltimore and Oakland. This is simply not the right thing to do.

This is why I love Mark Cuban, George Steinbrenner RIP and even Jerry Jones. That's because these guys care or cared about their cities. Owners like this current bum in San Diego I forget his name or the bigger bum Donald Sterling the Owner of the Clippers are just slimy little pricks. All Sterling cares about is making a profit. He doesn't give a dam about the Clippers or LA. He's also a crook. Google some of his Real Estate dealings in Southern California and you will know what I'm talking about. How this guy is able to sleep at night is beyond me. I'm a capitalist. I have no problem with people making money legally but if you're a freaking cheapscape don't buy a sports team you cheap Assclown. Go do something else. Anyways I had to get this off my chess because it's a subject dear to me and if you talk to people in San Diego this is in the conversation. Ok my rants are over. Good luck to everyone tonight.

If the Vikings lose to Detroit which is a good team this year in my opinion. I say we bench McNabb and go with Ponder so we can start our future now. I have always said that McNabb is a Hall of Fame QB and he has been disrespected more than any QB with his numbers in history. Now I know he has thrown some boneheaded picks in the past but he has had a Hall of Fame career and the numbers bear that out. With all that said if we can't win this week McNabb's best days may be behind him and we need to move forward. Let's not make the same mistake with McNabb that we did with Favre and hold on too long. Bring Ponder in and let's get ready for our future. Any thoughts?

There was an article I think on ESPN about how a losing team can make more profit than a competitive one. I remember the topic just not where i saw it. In sports its always about the money no matter what any of them say, even the players. they want people to believe these guys play for love of sport but that's what they call public relations. Its the only way they can get fans to justify the salaries and profits when Americans are getting paid less and losing jobs, they act like they love the game like a fan when most love the money or the opportunity to make a truck load of money. I think the days of athletes and owners who were really part of the community( live in your neighborhood, make similar salaries, etc.) are fading fast. Even high school sports is about winning to make money instead of the game. ESPN ranking kids in high school helped that. I remember seeing Jack Ham of the Steelers at Boscov's Department Store when I was a kid and if my dad hadn't pointed him out I wouldn't of recognized who he was, I still have his autograph from that day. Rooney the Steelers owner would walk around handing out dollar bills to kids, that's the way it was, now when they do something its about image to protect or increase profits. Always remember the true love of the game lies with the fan because they are willing to pay for it in today's world. That's why billionaires get cities to pay for stadiums instead of them paying add in overpriced seating, refreshments, souvenirs, and crap made in other countries its obvious today's owner is a business man not a fan.

I don't see McNabb getting benched anytime soon. currently 93% are on DETROIT (according to vegasinsider.com) and the line has stayed at 3.5. From my experience this usually means Vikings will at least cover the spread. I know what your thinking Det has looked good while Vikings look mediocre and that's when Vegas makes money. Don;t be surprised if you see this match up SU on SFTC. McNabb is the kind of guy that is more mentally in a game if he feels it means something and Vikes defense isn't bad. I won't touch this game and if I did I would take the points, no way 93% get paid out it just doesn't happen unless there is little action on that game which happens more in college football than Pro. Everyone thinks they can pick Pro Football. there will be all kinds of parlays and teasers and straight bets involving DET. While I think Det has a good shot at a wild card( with Packers winning the division) I think they lose their first game of the year in a low scoring game. 17-16 Minnesota.

Dont let it get to you smooth people of upper class care about net worth not what middle class and lower class live , think, or feel. To them we are all fools who allow them to live a life that 1% of the population ever experience. The best the rest of us can do is make some off the sports we love whether its gambling or collecting I'm always trying to make a buck off them and when your right you feel great and enjoyed the game. lol
GL Streakers
I locked in on Giants tonight and tomorrow taking the under in NC ST/Cincy game.

Thanks for correcting me, Smooth. I read Chipper's quote and he said that the only other place that he had encountered that problem with the football lights was in San Diego. I knew about Petco Park (a beautiful ball park BTW) and for some reason it didn't register to me at the time that Chipper was talking about the "old days" in San Diego. Petco has been around for several years now. Miami needs to get a dedicated baseball stadium, too! Eh?
I completely agree with you about the Chargers and their owner. The Chargers need to stay in San Diego and it would be a absolute travesty for them to relocate to anywhere, much less LA.

I read and liked your insight about the money side of sports and today's owners, Booyahz. Smooth is right. Guys like Cuban, Art Rooney (RIP), Jones, Steinbrenner (RIP), and McCaskey (RIP) are admirable. It is becoming more and more rare to find owners who care more about their cities than their bottom line. As you pointed out, Booyahz, the modern owner mostly is concerned with profit margins.
Thanks for the Vegas Insider tip. It is invaluable to know what the public percentages are. I used to look at Sportsbook, but they made that a premium feature. I also like the SBR forum.
Good luck guys!

I think that McNabb is your guy this year, no matter what. It would take a string of truly disastrous performances for me to even consider benching him. I am not ready, at this point, to throw him under the bus. Bringing in Christian Ponder now would only assure a losing season, in my opinion. The guy is not Cam Newton or Sam Bradford and I think his learning curve will not be as sharp. Given time, Ponder may develop. As history has taught us, Ponder may be given a shot sooner than later due to McNabb's likelihood to get injured. In summation, I do not think that it it is time to panic. The Vikings best shot at winning lies with the veteran, I believe.

Booyhahz you made some good points about the Owners no doubt. I look at Owners like Jerry Buss of the Lakers. He's no idiot and he likes money but you see how the Lakers are run every year. 1st class from top to bottom. Magic Johnson is still part Owner and he's in the mix. Kupchak, Jerry West was invaluable for years until basically forced out. But that organization is run well and I'm not saying that because I'm a Laker fan. I guess my point is if you're going to own a team run it with class. Run the team like you want to win. Fans don't mind paying more for a Owner who wants to win. But when you ask fans to pay for consistent losers due to lack of effort on management's part thats when it becomes one sided.
The movie moneyball is coming out. I believe it chronicles the Oakland A's and their ability to remain competitive for a number of years with a low budget. The Twins have done it and now we see Tampa doing it. So in my mind there is no excuse for the Padres to be a farm team every year. Everything you said is spot on. I love the Rooney family and the dedication they have shown to football and also I might add their believe in social justice by giving African-Americans and Hispanics a fair shake in the NFL coaching ranks. They had a real good Good Ol boys club in the NFL and Rooney said enough was enough. Much love to the Rooney family.

Bama-Some of my great memories as a kid growing up in SD was when the Dodgers came to town. Those games were electric and no matter how sorry the Padres were they always seemed to manage to give the Dodgers hell. Also I might add it was and still is a pure pleasure listening to Vince Scully do play by play. I subscribed to MLB and listen to him from time to time. That man can make a race of bottle tops sound like the most compelling sports event ever. Truly a great talent. Can you believe he's been broadcasting since they were called the Brooklyn Dodgers.

I hear ya Smooth. Maybe with the Chargers trying to leave the Padres are looking for a way out as well. There is definitely an agenda in the front office there. If you want out of a city you do the" Major League" movie scenario and profit while losing so bad fans lose interest and then move and try to contend. lol

team effort, just pick em if it feels right! you have 7 days can you pick one game in 7 days 21 times?

No doubt we're gonna follow what that member picks and then others will have a chance at the big money too. Think of it as conga line to the bank. LOL!
Rszeliga-Thanks for going back in the archives and pulling that quote out. I'm not sure what your intentions are/were but I can say that 9 months later. We have achieved more than anyone can imagine. Multiple $1000 winners. Whitesmith is a member here, Somanyrings as well and other All Stars. I'm not saying they won because of us but what I am saying is that numerous people have posted and PM me to tell me how much they appreciate this thread not just for picks and insight but also the camaraderie that we have here. So I stand behind our record and as the #1 thread on Covers I think it all speaks for itself. Maybe you want to clarify your post.

@Smooth: Smooth, I think his post is at the top of the box right after where it says quote. I think that he is saying that "it's a team effort, just pick em if it feels right! you have 7 days can you pick one game in 7 days 21 times?", unless, of course, that is also a part of your old post. It is difficult to remember without actually going back.
@ all: If that was his post, then Rszeliga's message is one of patience. He is saying that one winner per week is all that is needed to survive to get to the grand prize level. That is some good stuff, actually.
I crashed and burned with Seatlle in the botom of the ninth, this afternoon. I went to the well one too many times with them, as this was my third straight day of picking the M's. I lost a modest 3 gamer with today's loss. The loss prior this one ended a five gamer so, as you can see, I am having trouble putting it all together right now. Today's loss also dealt a crushing blow to my monthly hopes. I was in 49th place with a 15-6 record. At 15-7, the monthly prize seems unlikely now.The Monthly Prize seems so unobtainable from the outset, anyway. A real long shot, to be sure. I think of it more as a bonus for when we get that perfect streak rolling!
Well, that is quite enough rambling for now.
Good luck tonight, everyone!
@Rszeliga: Welcome aboard, Rszeliga!

I am really aggravated that I did not pick the Angels tonight! It was my first instinct to take them, but I also felt strongly about the M's chances of continuing the Twin's misery. At 1:09 and 50 seconds (first pitchwas @1:10), I locked in Seattle.
I guess my point is that the prospect of the earlier game starting lured me into going with my second choice. If both games had started at night, I would have chosen the Angels. Somehow I just could not stand the thought of seeing one option win while awaiting the start of the other. Does this make an sense? Has anyone else picked an early game out of impatience even though it was not their prime choice?
At any rate, the lesson learned is a simple one. I guess most of you do this anyway, but you should always go with your "A" game and disregard the starting times entirely. Just some more ramblings of a lunatic! Side note: WOW! Cincinnati is rolling! The Bearcats are dominating NC State. I picked them in the contest and in office pools.
GolfingMick has his W 10 on Cincinnati -8, so this is great news! Good luck, GM!
