The White House is reported to be set on a new cold war policy with the aim of turning Russia into a "pariah state".
That might be more explicable if what is going on in eastern Ukraine now were not the mirror image of what took place in Kiev a couple of months ago. Then, it was armed protesters in Maidan Square seizing government buildings and demanding a change of government and constitution. US and European leaders championed the "masked militants" and denounced the elected government for its crackdown, just as they now back the unelected government's use of force against rebels occupying police stations and town halls in cities such as Slavyansk and Donetsk.
When the Ukrainian president was replaced by a US-selected administration, in an entirely unconstitutional takeover, politicians such as William Hague brazenly misled parliament about the legality of what had taken place: the imposition of a pro-western government on Russia's most neuralgic and politically divided neighbour.
After Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to join Russia, the bulk of the western media abandoned any hint of even-handed coverage.

Putin is still living in the 60's. It doesn't matter if Russia is surrounded by ALL Democratic nations, why would anybody want to invade them? Their land is basically a piece of crap. Less than a 10th of Russia is crop land with just a 4 month grow period. Other than gas and oil what do they have that makes them so scared of their neighbors? They are like some 50 year old woman dreaming of their 20's and how beautiful they were and how all the men were in lust for them. They are still living in that moment and don't see the world for what it thinks of them now. They may have a history of being invaded, but they don't understand that for the most part, the world has turned the page on them. They're basically just a gas station with a nuclear bomb.

No evidence supports Russian claim the west staged a coup to overthrow Ukraine government in 2014. Actually, protests resulted from treason by the worst president in Ukraine history. Over 8 million people participated in peaceful protests for civil rights and freedom. Their goal was never power or profit. Violent crackdowns by authorities to disperse unarmed crowds lead to over 100 protesters killed and thousands injured. When bloodshed became too great, president fled to Russia before an 100% impeachment vote. Later, parliament approved full amnesty for protesters. Kyiv institute of sociology poll found most Ukrainians regard 2014 change of government as a popular revolution for dignity. Not an illegal coup.

Cease firings are temporary & rarely if ever result in peace.
Who will monitor & maintain the peace during the cease fire? China? NATO? What happens when either side violates the cease fire.
What about humanitarian efforts during the period? Will they be allowed & who will provide their protection?
Cease fires require trust. How do you trust the nation that invaded your country?
In war the only person you trust is/are the person(s) next to you. You don't trust those in the towns or villages or any POW'S. You believe what you see not what your hear. Cease fires do not end the violence or change what has happened. You can't be lulled into thinking your opponent will play by the rules because there are no rules in war.
You've said you are a history buff, so you know that desertion during war is signing your own death warrant.
When the smoke clears & it will definitely clear, it will take years for the psychological damage to heal for most. For some, there is no healing. I don't know how history will view Zelensky but I'm pretty sure Putin will be seen as the devil he is.

Simple, because the USA is guilty of many of the actions that the ICC condems. The USA would be guilty of war crimes, under ICC policy, during the Iraq War if this was the case..... so it is deemed not to be....

A senior Ukrainian official told CNN Tuesday that discussions are underway with China to organize a call between the Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss Beijing’s proposal for a peace plan for Ukraine.
