    UAW Chief Shawn Fain to ABC News;

    President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canada and Mexico are an "attempt to stop the bleeding" in the American economy, United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain told "This Week" on Sunday in defense of the controversial measures.

    "We're in a crisis mode in this country," Fain said, suggesting America's trade system is "broken" and in need of drastic reform. "We're in a triage situation," he added.

    Tariffs "aren't the end solution," Fain explained, "but they are a huge factor in fixing this problem."

    "Tariffs are an attempt to stop the bleeding from the hemorrhaging of jobs in America for the last 33 years," Fain said, suggesting the U.S. had lost "millions of jobs" since the inception of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994.

    "NAFTA sucks," Fain said.

    @UNIMAN

     This is funny, it is like the crack cocaine addict saying cocaine is good and we need it in our lives. The UAW has been getting the shaft on all the auto outsourcing so of course he is going to say that.

    Part of the reason why the Mexico offshoring has taken place is due to the abuses of the UAW and an attempt for automakers to make more money, which is garbage in my book but it is amusing seeing the UAW agreeing with tariffs.

    You created a great thread, thanks for this as all sides have been involved and for the most part been reasonable to each other.

    Tariffs are a dull tool used to shock the other side and I do not think a tariff has much of any impact because the party that absorbs the tariff is the US consumer in the end via inflation, so I think Trump likes to try and bully as a means to get his way and this is a pretty poor approach and it did nothing last time either.

    Tariffs are lazy and abusive, very destructive.

Well folks its no joke and it is real. Trump is trying his hardest to weaken our country.
        Bullshit !  I should've just stopped reading your post after this idiotic comment but I didn't ...  Our federal bureaucracy is bloated... that mostly includes entitlement spending &  Democrat giveaways..  So, get your damn facts right.  This bullshit mantra from you folks on the left on tax cuts gets tiring... You must enjoy paying higher taxes... or maybe you don't pay any taxes at all ?   Seriously, what kind of person volunteers to pay more taxes ?  You, apparently.

    Social security isnt an entitlement but its hard for magas to realize this.  And how exactly is our govt so bloated?  People having jobs?

    Like i have said many times magas would love to have no govt and just free to do whatever they want to do.

    Of course rich corporations should pay zero taxes to our country thru all the loop holes that have been put in place for them,lolllan_brick

    Gotta love when a poster says the country has debt because of democrat give aways, thats when you know theres no talking to them.  Yes in the history of our debt, its been caused by just democrats, republicans didnt cause any of our debt because they are super great at managing the countries money lmfaooooooooooooo

    For you to say that the government isn’t bloated is something I refuse to even let go by or slide . And this dope rhyme isn’t an attack on you of course . So don’t beat me like an already deceased or dead horse . Cuz I’m the glue here holding us together that’s gonna gallop and ride down yonder to the coast . Of I can’t even comprehend how the government isn’t too be mocked or it’s beyond reproach . Because if people are running it then yo , there is no way it can be as optimal or efficient as it should be . And I’m no book but respect this and look and read :

    if people are left unchecked , they get lazy and less things get done . And if we’re talking government , then you need to add corruption ,  which is more stress and less fun .

    Funny that Biden kept tariffs in place and then in an election year added more.

    That IndustryWeek story sure put holes in the "lazy, abusive, very destructive" narative.

    Honda to build plant in Indiana citing possible tariffs as a reason.

    IMO, this whole Trump tariff is more talk than anything else. Trump is bluffing for the most part to get change in trade agreements. It will get watered down to selective tariffs in the end.

So I imagine good corps have been focused on their JIT processes and are trying to figure ways to reduce input costs and given our economy is JIT heavy the way to slow inflation is to identify the JIT processes that are adding costs and find ways to lower those, but in reality the BEST way to lower inflation is to slow consumption. One thing we NEVER EVER hear about inflation is about lowering consumption and that will have more of an impact on inflation than rates or JIT improvements will.

    Could inflation simply be from throwing out "free" money during covid and everyone raising prices because money is flowing so freely? Is everyone just over analyzing the economy and giving too many reasons/excuses for inflation when maybe the reason was we shut production while allowing consumption while printing a massive amount of money? What was backing all that printing?

    but in reality the BEST way to lower inflation is to slow consumption.   Adding tariffs (assuming all costs are pushed on to consumers) be the way to slow consumption? Either the US business and/or consumer will pay the increase, or maybe both countries agree to eat some while not increasing pricing on the consumer as much? This way, everyone has to give a little but it's not only pushed on the consumer? There's a fine line between revenue and volume. Sometimes sacrificing one to increase the other is the way to go. Obviously a business/investor wants higher volume and higher rev but to keep the machine going, maybe all sides compromise during downturns.

    I don't think media is ever going to say we need to lower or slow our consumption (they need to sell ads and that would be counterintuitive), although it's a sure fire way to lower prices. Americans need their stuff and we love our credit here.

    Trump has been screaming for Powell to make large cuts in the interest rate ? Sound like gas on fire to me !

    Down 2% today and almost 6% over the last month. Poor people paying too much for stuff and rich people seeing their wealth go down. Is there anyone that isn’t going to feel this?

     Honda isnt part of the tariff issue, they have been manufacturing vehicles here in Ohio for years, not sure what Honda has to do with the conversation, they are not needing to be bullied by Trump so whomever wrote the article used a bad source.

    A better automaker would be Ford or Stellantis or VW not Honda or Toyota etc.

    @BigGame90

     Consumption is from the desire of consumers to have fast easy goods and service not really about government freebies as you covered in saying that our consumer debt is at high levels and people are not saving and are purchasing outrageously priced vehicles.

    People are lazy and are not price sensitive enough and that for sure is what feeds the marketing media and corps.

    One thing I would say that DOGE should attack lol is to put some serious restrictions on what food stamps EBT can purchase and reign in the greedy crappy corps from selling almost anything but booze and having it be covered, including conv stores and going out to eat. That I would like to see.

     Honda has production in the US, they would never be part of a tariff levy. My question wasnt that I needed to see articles, I do not see Honda or Toyota as corps that would get hit with a tariff since they have both produced cars here for decades.

    Follow up comment, if Honda especially or Toyota are going to get hit then Tesla would as well, they produce vehicles and import to the US they also manufacture parts and batteries then import to the US.

    So we have wackadoo running around while also party to tariff faults and who is taking billions in direct government subsidies. Sounds about right here.

    You said whomever wrote the article used a bad source. Well I guess half the media is wrong, your right?

    Your logic is illogical. Honda was going to build a plant in Mexico. Now it has changed to the US. Tariffs were cited as helping decide the US. We all heard that a Dodge Ram was going from 80 grand to 100 grand. Why? Dodge Ram heavyduty trucks are assembled in Mexico. an_light

    So yes, they would be part of a tariff levy.

    My Goodness!

    @UNIMAN

     You take that next step when it might or might not be true. Honda MIGHT build a plant in Mexico, ok well did they? And what is the line to which a tariff is levied? Is it for any production out of the US? Is it production in Canada or Mexico only? Is it full manufacturing or parts or what?

    Does Tesla deserve the same treatment as well since they manufacture vehicles and parts out of the US and then import?

    I fully agree Stellantis deserves to be hit, they have production out of the US and have for years, I also think Tesla should, I think Toyota should and there for sure has to be a threshold for when the tariff is enforced. If Trump throws down a tariff on production in Mexico even when a company has decades of production in the US, he risks the company pulling up US production and leaving completely. If I were Toyota and Trump threw that down I would leave the US.

    I can definitely understand how the U.S  Auto Workers feel about this, and their UAW president for that matter.   They've been getting outsourced since NAFTA was implemented.   This whole subject has diverging forces of a Worker-led economy versus a consumer-led economy.   Trump has clearly stated he is pro-worker, and willing to implement protectionist measures to bring/keep jobs in America.   It's a noble effort,  but will come at the expense of higher than normal inflation.

    Another issue w tariffs is the President is choosing which industries to protect ( like the automotive sector).... picking winners and losers.  I don't care who the president is.  I want them out of the business of putting their thumb on the economic scale.

    My prediction is this tariff gambit will flame out, and if Trump truly does press on, we will be able to put this gambit in the ash heap of history where it belongs.... and that will be the end of J.D. Vance, who has hitched his wagon on tariffs...

Vance, who has hitched his wagon on tariffs...

    with Ram built in mexico, they send up the transmission case to I believe South Carolina for that plant to install the torque convertor.  The tranny is sent back to mexico for install into truck.  Then the truck is sold in the US, so that tranny crossed the border three times.  This makes sense when there is free trade only

    The other question is why can't mexico just install the torque convertor in house?  If that mexico factory is smart enough to put together the tranny case, valve bodies, clutch packs and everything else then why cant they figure out the torque convertor part?  all the part does is bolt to the flywheel, there are dynamics I guess but it's just fluid

    I am sure this happens with Detroit and Canada as well, the back n forth parts border crossings

    Economists warned of greater recession risk in 2020 and 2024 elections because of Trump risky economic policies.  Unfortunately, they were right.   Despite inheriting a strong economy from Biden, Trump recklessly pursued unnecessary tariffs and spending cuts.   In government ruled by the super rich, top priority is income tax cuts despite consequences of higher budget deficits and debt.
