Testing during pregnancy may not guarantee the child will not be infected because of potential for false negative test results. The mother could acquire the virus later after testing. Many pregnant mothers do not receive testing. Half of all people infected may not be aware of their infections and could unknowingly infect others. Thus the risk is not zero. Since 1991, universal vaccination has decreased hepatitis infections in children by 99%.
