mask wearing and social distancing are virus-mitigation measures that
are not just meant to provide some level of protection for the individual,
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY to provide protection to others around YOU!
IOW, if mask-wearing actually ONLY provided protection to the wearer
and that wearer chooses to accept the risk to himself because it ONLY
affects himself, then sure, by all means, he/she should have that right -
- although IF he/she gets infected - even if asymptomatic, which is common!
- he/she then becomes a danger to OTHER PEOPLE.
This is an infectious virus that is spread through breath.
If one wants to accept the risk of breathing IN an infectious disease
because he feels the risk to himself of dying is incredibly low (although
he still could get severely ill and burden our hospital system) that may
seem acceptable, except that if he gets infected he becomes a DANGER
to OTHERS. Furthermore, the mask is primarily intended to stop the
spread from infected and asymptomatic-CARRIERS of the disease to
OTHER PEOPLE. It is a protection FOR THE COMMUNITY, not just
that individual. And as such, the community MUST have a say in that.
Our covid-version of "typhoid Mary" should NOT be allowed to spread
the disease without some REASONABLE mitigation efforts that protect others.
